Article: FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Marijuana dispensaries across the state could soon be forced to close their doors. Federal prosecutors have launched a crackdown warning stores they must shut down in 45 days.

Dispensaries could face criminal charges and confiscation of their property even if they are operating legally under the state's 15-year-old medical marijuana law. Some county officials agree with the crackdown. But, medical marijuana users say it's a bad idea.

Fresno County is home to more than a dozen medical marijuana dispensaries. Thousands of Valley residents visit these collectives daily, including Gerry Goodman of Fresno.

Goodman said, "I feel comfortable going there, and it helps me very much."

Goodman says he suffers from migraines and chronic pain in his neck and arm. He fears shutting down dispensaries will encourage people to get the drug from illegal dealers.

Goodman said, "Don't just say we're gonna shut it down. We're American citizens, why shouldn't we have the right to say we have a side, you have a side, let's compromise."

In August, Fresno County's Board of Supervisors considered both sides of the issue. Ultimately, they passed an ordinance banning marijuana dispensaries and limiting grows to remote industrial areas. Dispensaries currently in operation have until March to shut down.

Board member, Debbie Poochigian hopes getting the feds involved will make those closures permanent.

Poochigian said, "The neighborhood dispensaries have really been detrimental in some of our residential areas. I'm please the federal government is coming in and doing what they're doing."

And while what they're doing is legal, an attorney who represents marijuana collectives tells Action News -- the federal government's decision will be met with a great deal of criticism.

Brenda Linder said, "They're going to come under fire politically, fiscally and healthcare wise, what they're taking away."

California's four US attorneys have already sent letters to at least 16 collectives. In them, they state, federal law takes precedence over state law.

The US attorneys are scheduled to announce their coordinated crackdown at a news conference in Sacramento on Friday.

Obama must go...
This is from the reagan revolution not our current puppet. Lots of folks in my area are happy about this because it jacks the price up. some will say they are evil for wanting the price up but they, like their parents before them, try to live off of their crop as the economy is dead here so I can understand but I really feel for the dying, cancer, handicapped people who rely on disp/co-ops for medicine that allows them a better quality of life.

Let me shed some light on how this kind of thing benefits the feds and many others. They want this plant to remain illegal. 75% of all arrests are cannabis related. Potheads fill prisons, and keep the feds in business. If they legalize, all of these guys will be out of a job, we're talking tens of thousands of people, because suddenly overnight crime is cut in half. It's all about money and keepin your head above water... It was never about anything for the good of the people.

I like it when i read posts like yours because i get to see that somebody else understands why the government does the things it does regarding mj.

For anybody to think that a government would be pacified by taxes paid ,or job creation from the legal sale of med mj that person is ill informed.

When all taxes paid are added up,then the creation of jobs is added into the equastion, then the economy being fueled by these monies, once all those plus's for the government are added up combigned they are not 1/1,000 of 1% of the total revenue generated by keeping mj illegal.

When local police agencies are promised to recieve 50% of all seized goods or money from mj related offenses a conflict of interest is created, police depts nation wide are facing job cuts & elemination, benifit cuts, pay cuts & salary caps along with wage freezes, all the internal cost issues make mj growers & users an easy grab for large cash rewards.

For what its worth, one of 1st seized cars to be used as a DARE vehicle in Michigan belonged to me & my 1st wife, its a numbers game & every seizure or fine translates into overtime or job retention.

Even though I totally agree with you, I don't think that statistic is accurate. Marijuana arrests make up about half of all drug arrests. Of those, 88% are possession only offenses.

even if those numbers were right, it's still enough to prove my point. They make way too much money locking up folks who enjoy the smoke.

The new way the feds are cracking down is all over from Humboldt county down to San Diego county instead of going after the actual dispensaries they are going after the people that are renting building to dispensaries.
No offense but that is a pretty clever move, but bogus all the same. We need to stick together and be unified in our efforts.
The feds are threatening to take any building that is being renting to a dispensary and charge the renter a pretty crappy situation for someone just trying to make money and rent a space. Not fare and unjust I hope California can make it through like we have been.

Sorry to be harsh, but you guys are moaning cos the Feds are getting involved but...do you not live in the same California that in the last 2 years voted to keep it illegal?

I remember a vigorous no campaign on here...so tell me now, you reckon the Feds would be getting involved if it was fully legal in Cali?

UHH that bill wasn't to make it legal federally, it was to make it legal in the state for recreational use. It already is legal for medical use and the feds still fuck with us. So yeah I reckon the feds would still butt in. dum dum dum

That bill would've made it basically impossible for the Feds to fuck with you's. Everyone would've been growing and smoking, the sheer weight of public opinion can stop any Government interference.

BUT the arrogance of the MMJ industry trying to protect it's profits stopped that bill and now you's are living with the consequences. I say you's made you bed by stopping progress, now you's are gonna have to sleep in it.

As usual, you don't know what you're talking about.
It would not have made it impossible for the Feds to fuck with us as you put it.
And the Fed crack down would have happened even sooner if that bill had been passed.
It was in direct violation of Federal law, with no medicinal shield to hide behind.
It's wording was terrible and left many opened ended problems (aka loopholes) that Richard Lee would have used to profit off of.
It had nothing to do with the sick, and was mainly to let Oakland have the industrial style cannabis warehouses that Lee has envisioned.

Please learn to Google or use a search feature and read something before you just spout your uneducated opinion again.
