I was wondering how much electricity hps bulbs and flouresents use ill prob wanna grow like a couple of mothers clones and then flower about 6 or 8 plants at a time. i was wondering how much the electricity i am going to use and if the cops/ electric company are going to pick up on it and think im growing bud.
All the advise I've read is very good. There is one thing I haven't seen yet. You can vegg under 18 on 6 off lighting. That will slow down that meter! Good Luck!

i dont know about where you come from, but for what you want to grow i doubt anyone would think you have gone overboard with consumption.
if you think about how much a heater or aircon would use ,hot water heaters draw fucking huge amounts,i run my lights at night, but even when the meter reader comes i am home a lot,and air con and heaters etc are going ,three kids like to be cosy,i dont know how much i would use just on my room,i have aircon going 24/7 in summer one 400 one 600 lamps, three large fans circulating air and four air pumps an ionizer and water chiller/heater for res,so that does not seem to be a great deal of difference to the power company.
i think make sure you pay your bill, and do not attempt to steal power i.e bypass etc you will be peachy.

I live in tx, a rich neighborhood i might add, i was wondering if i used a 1000w or may be 2000w lamp(s), (in case i want a veg room and bud room) the electric company would notify the police. We have a two story three bedroom house. we got game room living room dining and breakfast area as well, i'm not sure of the the sq feet area coverage.

Hello,

I have a question about lighting but it's not about cops, I need use more than 15 amps at times and as most of you know ordinary house circuits use about 15 amps and if more the breaker trips off. What can i do about this, call a electrician?

I recommend you start a new thread/post. You'll get more attention to your question. I'm really interested in seeing others responses to your question.

I don't understand what the power company would do if you were running let's say, 20 1000 W lights. So you're power bill is really high, so what? it's not illegal. If you pay your bill, what would they do, come to my house? Don't talk to them, just say, yes I use a lot of power for my business or whatever. So they tell the cops (doubtful), who don't have the time or budget for this stuff in most big cities. If they can't smell it, they can't do anything to you. I'm assuming you're not an idiot and you don't have a record, not on probation or anything. I don't understand the logic behind people worrying about this. By the way, I run multiple thousand dollar bill a month and have never heard anything from anyone. Friends of mine run 60 light houses, 30 on, 30 off 24 hours a day and pay their bill, no problem.

The power company is a private business, they want their money, plain and simple. And actually people never get busted because of their power bill, they get busted because they try and steal power by bypassing their houses breaker and blow the transformer for the whole neighborhood. Could you give me one link showing a bust relating from a power investigation, I've never seen one?

High electric bill leads to marijuana bust

SAVAGE — A higher-than-normal electric bill was used by police to help shut down an alleged marijuana-growing operation in the city.
Officers from Savage, Washington County and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) took part in a raid Sept. 19 on a home at 14262 Allen Blvd. That raid resulted in charges against two men and the confiscation of 380 marijuana plants.
After learning about a possible marijuana-growing operation at the home, police launched an investigation and conducted surveillance during August and September.
In addition to seeing Chris Edward Zimmerman, 36, of Burnsville, visit the home on a regular basis, police noted there were two irregularly placed vents coming out from the basement of the home. Using thermal imaging, officers located a heat source in the basement.
Law enforcement also obtained the electric usage records for the home from May through September and determined that the usage was three to five times greater than for the same time period in the previous year.
On the day of the raid, police simultaneously served search warrants on Zimmerman’s home and the home of Joseph Thomas Jaspersen, 28, of Robbinsdale. Jaspersen also owns the home on Allen Boulevard.
Zimmerman and Jaspersen are each charged with second-degree conspiracy to manufacture or sell a controlled substance, a felony, and aiding or abetting the manufacture or sale a controlled substance.
Charges against a tenant at the home are being reviewed by the Scott County attorney. The tenant allegedly told police when they entered the home with the search warrant that the marijuana-growing operation belonged to Zimmerman and Jaspersen and that the two men harvested the plants together every six to eight weeks. Zimmerman was also present when the search warrant was executed. Another search warrant, served on a storage unit leased by Zimmerman, allegedly netted several quantities of marijuana seeds.
In addition to the marijuana plants, police said they also seized equipment used in the growing operation, including fluorescent lighting arrangements with timers, fans, electric pumps and hoses, watering systems, plastic bags, chemical charts, fertilizers and calendars showing grow schedules.
Police said the plants, if grown to maturity, harvested and dried, would produced approximately 95 pounds of marijuana.

but that's the whole point, Chinga. A large electric bill didn't launch the investigation. It was investigated once they already had numerous other leads.

That is generally the case of "other leads" and prosecutions.

If people pay their bill and keep their mouth shut, then no problems.

Thanks for the link, that would be a good yield for them, 95 lbs, haha. Using only 3-5 times the average household use, not likely. But ya, that was my point, by the time the cops are onto you that much, the electric use doesn't matter. They're kicking the door in based the other evidence they've collected even if you're showing a normal power bill. In fact, sometimes they use a low power bill to say you're growing because you must be stealing it... damn cops. I was just addressing the numerous posts I've seen of people worrying about it. If you're in a small town where everyone knows everyone else I'd worry about it.

You could always get a bigger breaker! like a 20 or 30 amp and have it installed inplace of your 15 amp.

While I am no electrician, I do not believe that you can just simply change the breaker, I think that you would have to re-wire it also. You can not exceed what the wires are rated for, or else things will get pretty hot.

well i have a question for anyone. right now we are running just a 400 watt hps. but we are planning on upgrading to a 600 watt hps/mh air cooled light, and where iam in florida they use infrared scanners. so we are planning on getting poly shield and lining our grow room. right now our power bill stays at 150 and thats with us turning off things that dont need to be on and so on. but its hard b/c my bf's dad likes to leave every light on in the house when he's not in the room! so basically what am asking is, should we have anything to worry about when we upgrade, or will the poly shield take care of everything?
