When is the best time to plant seeds here in oz??? I just planted some but not sure if its the correct time to do so. Also how long does it take to grow to its maximum??

The last time I grew outdoors was about 20yrs ago. I don`t remember when I planted but for some reason I seem to be thinking that I let the plant grow for about a year.

Any and all suggestions welcome.

edit: also I have 2 seedlings approx 1inch and tommorrow the weather is going to be hot. Should I give the seedling any shade??? They are not in pots, straight in the ground.

Spring time is a good time to start planting your seeds. If you ever forget, fathers day is the first Sunday in September in Australia....just happens to be between the 1st and 7th day of Spring (as far as the calendar is concerned). You can plant later in the season without any problems, just that your plants will not have as much time to vegetate so will be a bit smaller.

How long does it take to grow to it's maximum? Depends on the strain. Indica dominant strains will be ready earlier and Sativa dominant strains later. For your plants to start forming buds, they need to produce enough of the hormone to get them into gear. This hormone is produced at night time, so the longer the nights, the more hormone is produced. If you read some hydro threads you will find that the growers start off with a 18-6 light schedule in order for the plant to veg and grow. Once it hits the desired size they change to a 12-12 light schedule to get the plant to bud. The 18-6 light schedule can be thought of as spring and the 12-12 light schedule can be thought as autumn (or at least the days getting shorter and shorter until winter hits).

Amber alert. That is a thread started by subcool about when to harvest your plant to achieve a desired high. When you decide to harvest it pretty much comes down to the individual and what sort of high you're looking for. Trichs being the easiest and reliable way of telling when;

Mostly Clear = More of an Energetic High
Mostly Amber = More of a Stoned High

Obviously 50/50 would give you a bit of a mix.

The high also of course depends on the Sativa/Indica side of things, but the above info will still play a part into it.

want know if your plants are done. Post a pic in that thread and fdd2blk will tell you how long he thinks you have to go until harvest.

If that is all a bit too much for you, then a rule of thumb is when about 2/3 of the pistols have turned brown (although this isn't the most reliable way of telling)

Hope that helps you some.

Cheers

Get some mulch around the little seedling, water first. If every day is hot then water every 2 days and next time raise them in a nursery till they are about 6-12".

Today is going to be 30deg and tommorrow is supposed to be 32.
The 2 that are planted in soil will be staying put with no shade and I have another 1 that is in a pot which has now been moved to a spot that has more shade.
Thanks to everyone for your replies, much appreciated.

Is it still ok to plant outdoors here now? We still have atleast a good 4 months of nice weater and long light. I don`t know the strain of the seeds as they are just plain ol bagseed.
Will they be ready in four months or will it take much longer?

@maddog123, you got both right. Vic and that its unpredictable weather here.
@forgetiwashere, thanks. Thats what I wanted to here.
But will they still flower while they are still getting lots of sun? or will I have to let them go longer time daylight savings finishes for less sun to make them flower???

I waiting for a few different strains of seeds to arrive. Should be here in a week or 2. Will it still be ok to plant these outdoors here?
If not, I`ll just wait for the heat to die off and do a indoor grow with them. I prefer out door as its kinda free too do.
Whats the best potting mix to get thats availabe here in oz? I wouldn`t mind getting a few different strains going in big pots around the yard. If 2-3 weeks from now will not be to late. Hopefully I`ll have all my different beans by then.

I think you will be fine germinating them in 2 weeks time. We have had a bit of a cold start to Spring...so it's not like you would have gained too much if you had started them even 2 weeks ago (outdoors that is). If you have ordered the strains off of a seedbank then you most probably got some free seeds. Either do the ones you bought now and the free ones indoors or vice versa.

As for potting mix...I have just recently made my own...50% Bunnings potting mix, 25% Compost and 25% Worm Castings. That should be more than enough nutrients that I only have to just add water (but will top dress during flowering with some compost made in spring). The reason that I built my own was to have it in bulk for multiple grows & because I couldn't find any information on any good potting soils here in Aus...

And as for shade...don't worry about it if you have a sound watering set up.

Cheers

not necessary, in the wild they would sprout and thrive in full sunlight.
I had a some seedlings out around this time last year, they died :(. The sun gets unbearable sometimes, It was probably since my roomate was a dick and forgot to water them, but he only missed that one day, so some shade until theyre more developed is what I've been going with, I'm still getting the ropes and learning new ways to grow.

i like to cut the bottom out of a 1 gallon pot and turn it up side down around my seedling. it helps keep them shaded for a week tell the roots get going.

I will water a little in da morning and a little more at night if needed. 1 of my seedlings had a half a 2ltr plastic bottle over it and today it has cooked. I still have 3 others but I really want to grow the seeds I have on order which im yet to receive. These will be my main ones. The 1`s I have now are just bag seed.
I will get just the regular potting mix I used in the past and add perlite to it. I dunno about worm castings though, i`ve never heard of it till I stumbled across this forum. I will read up more on it before i deside to use it.
I will also grow 1 plant in coco with perlite. I have the pot with coco in it already just not the perlite.
Feels like these seeds are taking forever to arrive. I hope they do.
I`m also gonna have to invest in some plastic roof sheets for my back varandah and some mesh to go around the sides. I think it will make an ideal spot for me to have outdoor plant. Also with the mesh hopefully the neighbours wont see them.
