This is what's wrong with religion and why people need to think for themselves. Religion is evil and should be stamped out.

A 14-year-old Bangladeshi girl allegedly raped by a much older cousin has died after being publicly flogged for adultery, media reports said.

Hena Begum was sentenced to receive 100 lashes by a village council made up of elders and Muslim clerics in the district of Shariatpur, about 35 miles from the capital, Dhaka, the BBC said today.

She endured about 80 lashes before collapsing Monday, according to The Daily Star, a Bangladeshi newspaper. Her family took her to a hospital, where she died.

"What sort of justice is this? My daughter has been beaten to death in the name of justice. If it had been a proper court then my daughter would not have died," Dorbesh Khan, the girl's father, told the BBC.

Family members said Hena was raped by a 40-year-old married cousin, The Daily Star said. The man's family beat up the teen, then accused of her adultery, the newspaper said.

The very next day, she was sentenced to the flogging in a fatwa, or religious ruling, issued by the village council under Islamic Shariah law, the BBC said.

Her father was also told pay a fine of about $700, police told the BBC.

Four people, including a Muslim cleric, have been arrested in connection with Hena's death, the BBC said. Police said they were looking for another 14 people in the case.

Bangladesh's high court has ordered district officials in Shariatpur to explain why they did not protect the girl, The Daily Star said. The court ruled eight months ago that Shariah punishment was illegal.

In December, a 40-year-old woman in Rajshahi district died after she was publicly caned for allegedly carrying on an affair with her stepson.

religion is just a form of mass think, just like politics. have everybody thinking alike and theyre easier to control.

We need to regain our individualism.

...very sad story...

well as terribly wrong and horrible as that story is i disagree whit what everyone else commenting is saying. religion is what gave me a conscience, without it i couldn't imagine why i would feel bad about doing anything bad....guess thats why it doesn't bother ppl these days to fuck others over if its better for them. I think adultery is one crime that should be punishable by death and public humiliation, similar to murder it can ruin the lives of many many ppl for many generations, not just the person you commuted the crime against, all for a few min of greedy pleasure because ppl have no self-control or conscience.

You sound like a terrible person if you only restrain from terrible acts because of your religion. More than terrible, it makes you sound sub-human, like you can't come to the same conclusions about not doing bad things.

There are radical groups in this country trying to get Shariah Law to be allowed to be practiced in our country (USA) right now. Wake up before its to late.
there's also a radical group in this country that supports Calvinistic Baptism (a form of christianity) that thanks God for 9/11 and IED's. They argue that 9/11 and our misfortunes in the middle east are due to our permissive attitude towards homosexuality. they are also less than thrilled about jews.

...I think it's pretty obvious that no one says "there, now that I have religion, I will no longer do (x) thing that fcks people up". When people say things like that, it's likely an abbreviated form of a longer story on how it was a positive influence.

Listen, if a group of 'freethinking' non-religious people started to cane someone in a frenzy are they then the spokespersons for that 'group'? The potential for disaster is always present. I guess it depends on who is at the helm and how much reality they are currently tapping into. Besides, most of this sht happens behind closed doors. And, a good percentage of the people committing 'silent' crimes think for themselves, as you say.

Then you are a disgusting, terrible, person.

If the only reason you wouldn't do bad things is because you fear god, I hope you meet your god sooner than later.

I don't think that you thought this through. Even though you attribute your conscience to religion, this is not where it comes from. I am betting that you are christian (or muslim, perhaps?): I'm am also betting that you don't believe ALL of the monstrous sections of the bible, but you believe the majority of it. Most sane religious people do this, they cherry pick the seemingly moral sections of their holy books and discard the obviously insane parts. But you see, if you can differentiate the moral sections from the immoral, your morals/conscience cannot come from the book from which you are cherry picking. Instead, that moral sense was within you beforehand. The vast majority of humanity had a developed moral sense WAY before christianity came about, before the torah, bible or qur'an. You have done immoral things in your life, what if a popular holy book stated that you should be put to death for those things? You might change your tune. In any case, your inane post makes the point of how dangerous religious dogma can be, far better than the OP or any atheist ever could. I don't know any non-religious people whose morality are as warped as your own. Good job...
