Since they Issued the permit to drill without adequate inspection of the Rigs or the Plans to for Spill remediation
Now what the Goverment is also Responsible for is Getting BP to pony up billions instead of having to sue them for every penny

I don't feel a lack in government oversight is what caused the pipe to break...I think it broke...it just fucking broke...shit breaks...shit happens...it wasn't an intentional thing where any amount of govt approval would have changed...but meh whatevs

But what is important is the
BACKUP SYSTEM to prevent the Spill was Broken and there was no Redundant system in Place
Yeah Car tires go Flat and what BP did was The same as Hitting the Road without a Spare in the Trunk

It is easy to use hindsight and make claims that "big government" would have prevented or mitigated any given disaster(s), man-made or otherwise. It's quite another to prove that is has ever done it.

So the solution is for the feds to create a multi billion dollar department of being a nanny over each and everything in existence? Staffed with mostly incompetent morons who push paper and can not cut it in the public sector.
I would give them a permit that has a "dont spill oil" clause in it. If they spill X amounts of oil they will lose that permit and they will not be given any new permits for X amount of years. If it is an area of concern enviormentally I would make them pay for a private agency to perform inspections. If the Seirra club or hugatree has objections they will be allowed to accompany inspections.

Two and three are one in the same, they both don't care until they are forced to, such is the power of the barrels at the end of the government's guns. The problem, of course, is when this all knowing, all seeing, bloated government starts making companies care about things they shouldn't have to care about. Unfortunately, once you get to that point (long since reached it) you can't really put the genie back in the bottle.
And as I've said so many times before, when the power shifts to the opposite political party, they can use that lovely power you granted them, to impose their beliefs, restrictions, morals...etc, on you. In the history of mankind, once the government's power grows, it Always ends badly.
