Possibly A Stupid Question.

I was wondering if you could tell a plants genetics by, so to speak "dna". Basically do plants have a type of dna that would allow people to observe its genes like a we do so many other living things.

For an example of what I mean is, say you take a plant growing (like bag seed) would you be able to tell its genetics any way besides sativa dom or indica dom ect.

i'm sure if you were to break it down to dna, you could separate strains through their genetic makeup. just like in humans, one would have blue eyes, one red hair. it's all in the dna. been a long time since i took a science course, so don't quote me lol. there are guys on here that can look at some nugs and guess their heritage through experience.

The money for the equipment that would likely be necessary for DNA testing would not be worth the expense especially for bagseed, IMHO. Also I think guessing strain by just looking at a pic of a nug or a plant, would be like guessing the mega millions lottery numbers for a year, again IMHO.

Interesting.. id love to send them a nug of this bag seed I have and see if they can send me in the right direction for finding the strain or atleast one like it. Btw have you heard of them doing that? Distinguishing strains and their dna code?

Lol no I would not be buying the equipment. I would just send a nug to a lab or something/someone who does have the equipment. And this bag seed is worth it.. IMO

Also man I don't think he meant looking at pictures.. more like physical and smoking observing is what I think he was saying. Just like they do in judging cannabis.

Some bag seed grows can indeed become some fave budz. But, unless you run out of seeds and killed a mother and all her clones. What would be the point of knowing the strain anyway?

Because id really like to get a male and get some seeds to collect. And id rather not use silver thiosulfate solution to stress a plant to make fem seeds.

Plus I don't plan to keep the same strain growing forever.... especially when I move, I don't plan on living in the dump I do now the rest of my life.. too many reasons.. but it all really doesn't even matter.

not necessarily for dna genetics, but i do know of dispensaries that test the thc, cbd, and mold/pest content of their nug. to make an honest sell. i don't wear a lab coat or anything, but for sure it could be done. maybe more likely at a college of a medicinal friendly state doing tests or something of that nature.

You can DNA fingerprint a plant just like you can DNA finger print a person - every one is unique.
Ok so you can, now has anyone done it? Like to tell which strain a plant is. Because even if you get a plants dna code, it would, as you said, be unique so that wouldn't exactly help figuring out exatly what strain it is. Or would it? Just like brother and sister have unique dna even though they came from the same parents. Which is why I said "type of dna" since I'm not very scientific.

Maybe I should just get a dagree in horticulture. Would probably answer my question :P

Edit* But I think I get the concept. I doutb you'd be able to say, this is "sour kush" just by looking at its dna alone. Maybe if they had a system or something

I hope I did not offend or upset anyone. I can understand wanting to have a supply of really good strain seeds. And too answer the original thought, the only stupid question is the one that isn't asked.:peace:

Not at all I was just explaining my reasons. Which wouldn't matter in the end anyway :P sorry if I sounded rude.

then again, you would have to match that dna to something on file, like a fingerprint.

:( I was hoping someone would have had a great big book with every strain or atleast a lot of them with their "codes" or what not.

I really was.. kinda bums me out to be honest. I guess take my chances making fem seeds
