The "we" part is an illusion. How many real people in Japan actually aggressed against individual Americans or vice versa? Only thru the construct of Nationalism and the blind obedience of people "just following orders" can war happen. People are used as pawns. It is acceptable to defend oneself, but not to kill another individual that hasn't harmed you regardless of their "team". Perhaps humanity will recognize this some day. Centralized authority / Government is what makes war possible.

I agree whole heartedly but as you stated it is a part of life. I know when I served in the IDF, we were not fighting against men we knew had attacked us but against men who chose to wear a uniform of a group that wished to attack us, I dont know if I'm making any sense here I'm trying though.

Many people do not "choose" to wear a uniform and many that do have regret knowing that the person they may be killing or trying to kill is a pawn from the other side. When people stop using Nationalism as an excuse to exterminate other people we will have advanced. It may take some time. We each as individuals bear responsibility for our own actions. The cloak of a uniform does not absolve us of this, despite the exortations of those wish us to kill in their interest. There are few heroes....only dead people.

Now upon reading that I'm not sure how to take it. Do I regret killing yes more than anything in this world and it haunts me all the time am I proud of my fellows yes and some of them were heros. I understand and agree with the dislike of nationalism but do you honestly think it will ever change? I mean look at the entire history of mankind we have always split ourselves up into tribes/nations its a survival mechanism. With out it I'm not sure we would still be around as a species.
