question about hps lighting

i have a 600 watt hps light a ballast, would it be ok if i put in a smaller light bulb, say a 250 or 400 watt hps in, i know the 600 watt is alot better but just to help control the heat and save energy

no it would be fine, i had a 1000watt ballast that i threw a 250 in and it worked out just fine, the only problem is that sometimes it can reduce the bulb life by a few hours.

Oh really that doesn't bother me if it cuts the light bulbs life by a few hours, all i'm worried about is if it would burn my house down or something terrible lik that
