A dwarf claims he was partially paralyzed on his birthday when a stranger lifted and heaved him onto the hard ground outside an English pub, according to The Telegraph.
Gerald Henderson, the victim, blames English rugby players who attended a dwarf-tossing contest at a New Zealand bar during the World Cup for inspiring the hooligan, The Daily Mail says.
While smoking a cigarette outside The White Horse in Wincanton on his 37th birthday in October, Henderson says a drunken stranger picked him up and threw him, causing him to land hard on his back, Metro says. Henderson rejoined his friends, who were shooting pool, but soon began to lose feeling in his back and legs.

Police were called to the Jupiter, Fla., home of 62-year-old Janet Knowles at around 11:30am local time Sunday on a report of a domestic disturbance, The Palm Beach Post reported.
They found a 65-year-old man, whose identity and relationship to Knowles were not released, suffering from bleeding head injuries.
The man told officers he had been watching the show when Knowles got "upset with Judge Judy" and hit him in the head and arm with the hammer.
Knowles, who reportedly had difficulty conversing coherently with police, confessed that she attacked the man because she was "mad" at Judge Judy Sheindlin.
She was being held at Palm Beach County Jail and faces a charge of aggravated battery using a deadly weapon.
Her victim was treated at the scene, and his condition was unknown Tuesday.

Q: I have a problem, but Im a good girl and I am a little embarrassed to describe it to you. Still Im going to do my best to get at the heart of the matter without being too graphic.
I have an insane gag reflex. I have tried everything to train myself to suppress it. I have had no luck. This leads to my current problem. Lets say for example I gag almost instantly when I put a toothbrush in my mouth. Now lets say my boyfriend just loves when I put his toothbrush in my mouth. Now lets say Ive nearly tossed by cookies when my boyfriend even gets said tooth brush near my mouth.
Finally lets say Id really like to fix this problem and quick or my boyfriend is going to stop putting his tongue all over my toothbrush, which is something Id be really sad about.
Can you help?

I too have trouble when someone puts an instrument (dental or otherwise) into my mouth. For me the trouble begins when my tongue is touched.
I tried everything, but I really started to believe there was nothing to be done.
That is until my dentist noticed a harsh reaction when he depressed my tongue with his little mirror and I violently shot up out of the chair and made right for his sink.
Have you ever tried making a fist with your left hand? he asked.
Not until you pull out the floss. I replied (a bit too harshly).
Try doing it now while I work in your mouth, but be sure to squeeze your thumb inside your fist as well he said.
I spent the next 10 minutes of my exam doing just that.
I didnt gag once.

The folks over at Reddit's Ask Science forum deliberate as to why this is, and they point to a 2008 study that shows it to be effectivenot to mention lots of anecdotal evidence on the internetbut whether it's an effect of the nerves in your hand or just a distraction, it looks like it's a pretty useful trick. This reminds me a bit too much of the folk remedy for "restless legs" - put a bar or two of Ivory Soap 9no other brands or types) under the bedsheet on the mattress down by the legs.
i get restless legs wicked bad at times, and my xgf had me try this. I was skeptical but also liked to please her. So for a month i had these migrating rectangular bergs on my side of the bed. Needles to say ... no result.
Imo there are many weird counterintuitive remedies kicking around out there ... simply look at some hiccup "cures" and the effusive personal accounts of their effectiveness. The human will to believe the just plain weird is amazingly strong imo. cn

North Korean authorities are punishing mourners who failed to exhibit sincere sadness and despair after the death of Kim Jong Il on Dec. 17, the Daily NK reported Wednesday.
The online North Korean newspaper, which is published by opponents of the governing regime, said a source in North Hamkyung Province revealed the information. The source told the paper authorities are handing down at least six months in a labor-training camp to anybody who didnt participate in the organized gatherings during the mourning period, or who did participate but didnt cry and didnt seem genuine, according to the Daily NK.
There are an estimated 200,000 offenders and families held in North Korean prison camps, according to a May 2011 report from Amnesty International. The report details two types of camps known as zones. One zone, known as a Total Control Zone, is for people who have committed serious crimes. People in these camps are never released.
The second type of zone, called a Revolutionary Zone, are camps for people who have committed what North Korean authorities perceive as less serious crimes. These crimes may include making critical comments toward government policy or trying to cross the border. Sentences in Revolutionary Zone camps can range from a few months to 10 years.
The report estimates that 40 percent of inmates in the camps will die from malnutrition, and every former inmate interviewed for the report had witnessed at least one public execution while being held.

The three-judge panel devotes 11 pages to explaining why Omar Grayson, a former inmate at Illinois' Big Muddy Correctional Center, can go ahead and sue a prison officer who forced him to shear his thick, braided locks.
The opinion even includes a photograph of Reggae superstar Marley to illustrate what dreadlocks look like. Marley died in 1981.
Grayson's a member of the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem and claimed the haircut violated his religious rights.
The appellate court notes the prison allows committed Rastafarians to keep dreadlocks but appeared to discriminate against other religions that also hold long hair in high esteem.

"We had the dog in an empty room and we instructed the owner and another person - someone unfamiliar to the dog - to walk across the room several times," the scientist explained.
"The people walked in opposite directions, so they crossed many times in front of the dog and we measured how long the dog looked at one person versus another."
The research team then instructed the two people to leave the room via two different doors and allowed the dog to approach one of the doors.
"Most of the dogs gazed at their owners for most of the time and then chose to wait by the owner's door," said Dr Mongillo.

My bff and I went to a county fair. We walked thru the barns and we came across the sheep barn. I'm just lookin' around and my friend says, 'Will you look at the size of the balls on that sheep'. So, of course, I came running, I just had to see this. Well those sheep's balls were just about dragging on the ground.
She then said, 'Look, look at those, look at the size of those.' Then from over the stall wall we hear an old man's laughter and he said, 'You can certainly can tell who's a city woman in the sheep barns.' And he just crackled some more.
I think of that every time I see sheep.

A man who had pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter stemming from a crash near Tampa, Fla., on Christmas Day 2007 now denies causing the crash that killed three of the four people in the vehicle he hit.
David Belniak has sued the estate of Ray McWilliams, the now-deceased driver of the other vehicle, for more than $15,000, saying it was actually McWilliams who caused the crash by abruptly changing lanes, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
McWilliams initially survived the crash but later died. Belniak was sentenced to 12 years in prison, where he remains.
The money is to compensate Belniak for medical bills, "pain and suffering," and "loss of capacity for the enjoyment of life," according to the suit.
The Times reported that Belniak's attorney, Debra A. Tuomey, who is also his sister, said the government's prosecution amounted to a character assassination and Belniak accepted a plea deal only to avoid risking getting a life sentence in trial.
Tuomey said she wanted her suit, filed last month, to be considered alongside an existing suit brought by the victims' relatives against Belniak, scheduled for trial in April.
