5x2' closet / 400 watt hps / a 1x1 opening in ceiling... Will I have heat problems?

I'm new to this, and planning a small closet operation.

The closet is 5 feet by 2 feet.

I want to put maybe 3-4 plants in there.

I'm not planning to hook any kind of ducting on my light, rather, I there is a 1x1 foot opening in my closet ceiling - Just slides right open. I'm planning to put a fan down on the floor, and another hanging up higher.

Do you think the heat will simply rise up and out in to the attic... no problems?

Thanks.

Sounds right... But without ducting and a scrubber, how are you planning on cleaning the odor from that air that moves into your attic?

No i think you will have problems......You need atleast 1 4inch inline fan and you need to connect ducting from that fan to the hole in the ceilling then you shold connect more ducting to the other side of the fan and connect that to the grow hood..... Now you will have proper ventilation setup..... Just Putting a couple desk fans in there is not proper ventilation.... Do it right and you will be much happer down the line....... so to clarify the air should go as follows..... into your closet>hood>ducting>fan>ducting> attic

That hole is not an all purpose hole, exhausting stale air out and bringing fresh air in. Before you said you had a 7x4 room and we said a 400 was great. Now you have a 5x2 room, a 400 won't be so great unless you air cool the hood, exhaust the stale air, and bring in fresh air.

i have the exact same size closet, 5x2 floor space and 6 half foot high. a shelf along the top actually cuts the height down to five foot nine. I too was going to put a 400w light in there, but I'm on a budget, and the light, plus an air cooled hood, plus a good fan add up to alot of cash I don't have. So i'm being practical to my needs and buying a 250 instead. Here's my ventilation idea for the space, and I'm hoping footclan will respond to it as I'm seeing you all over these grow room threads, so I'm hoping you know what you're talking about. Anyway I said there is a shelf along the entire top of my closet. It's like a ceiling to the grow area really, and the nine inch high space above is like the attic. I'm planning on closing the closet door, having holes near the bottom of the door or small holes all through the door, which ever would be most effective, I could also run a four inch fan inline if it is needed. One oscillating fan inside the grow space blowing over the canopy. I plan on cutting a hole in the shelf to allow the hot air to exit the space and enter the "attic", then I plan on having a six inch fan blowing air out of the "attic." Where I am unsure is the best location size and shape of the hole. I can make a cut the length of the closet along the back of the shelf, taking like the back four inches off all the way across. Or I can cut off an end of the shelf, making a 1x2 opening at one end of the closet into the small space above. The inline would be opposite of this, and the fan would blow from the inline side to the opening side. hot air would rise up into the space and then be sucked out. I've read alot of manuals about ventilating catepillar engine rooms, super technical stuff, and I think I've gotten a good idea of how the air will move, but I'm still feeling indecisive. I could also make a large square hole in the middle, with a hood like thing reducing the hole to six inch ducting. run that to the fan and out, but I think that will only reduce air flow. These are all just ideas. Do you think they could handle a 400w, or should i stick to the 250. and odor isn't a concern for me.

doubt it will work but try it! run for a day or 2 w/ no plants & see what the temps do.
what you didn't post was how you plan to get the air into the closet. a good sized hole at the bottom may allow enough airflow to maintain temps.
