Things to do on the cheap in Michigan

We stay at home a lot. When we do go out I've noticed that things are jumping in price. How do people afford to go out anymore? And if you have kids and go out - Wow. A night at the movies would be a fortune.

So here is a family friendly thing to do and isn't expensive.

During the summer go to Michigan State University behind the Crop and Soil Science bldg. is the All-American Trials for garden plants. MSU is one of 16 universities that are asked to participate. See the All-American Rose before everyone else does.

There is, also, a Children's Garden that teaches kids about plants and it makes it fun and easy for you to describe how plants grow. There's a place there where the side walk has bells under it.

The horse barns are open to everyone, all year. If you check their schedule they even have rodeos that go on between universities and they are free or low cost.

They even have horseshoeing contests for free.

And the Planetarium is mostly free and the profs go outside and show kids where to look in the sky in the real world.

Cranbrook has a great children's museum. From time to time they have speakers the last time I went I saw Dyson of the Dyson vacuum speak on experimenting.

They have many gardens to roam - anytime. I love their sunken garden and on certain days they have tour guides to answer your questions.

Wear good shoes there will be a lot of walking.

The rose garden is incredible. They hire a full time person to take care of the rose and flower garden.

LOL, I like it. Gets the job done and in an enjoyable fashion too.

But, I NEVER enjoyed shoveling snow.

Brunch with Bach at the DIA. It isn't dirt cheap, but it includes entrance fees to the museum. You can go for entrance and music only, too.

I wouldn't trust the ice just yet. It hasn't been cold enough.

But there is the trusty 'Tip Up Town' it's the first year that I can think of that they are charging a $6 entrance fee. I wonder if they will change the dates because of the lack of cold weather?

Great cars and several videos that continual loop.

55,000 sq ft of seeing cars that everyone thought had been destroyed. FYI-they were hidden by employees from management to save them!

Henry ford museum is a must! If you're there try to hit the ford rouge factory tour, it's awesome.

Visit Eastern Market on the Saturdays in season.

Edit: You have to take the kids into Rock's Peanut Shop. Warning: do not eat at Nick's Coney unless you want to chance getting sick.

Go to the Detroit Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle. I think it's still free.

If you like bookish kind of places that are just too cool for words. Go to Port Huron and get a cup of java and soup or sandwich at the Raven's Cafe' on Military Street.

Go upstairs an sit along the window that way you can watch the street and the freighters go by. Great spot for a intimate one on one without the feeling of being in a restaurant.

Get the times for when the freighters will be entering the St. Clair River (I think the Det. Press has those times) perfect spot for watching the big boys up close and grab a picnic basket have a good time along the waterfront. Port Huron created a great park almost underneath the Blue Water Bridge. Take the dog and a frisbee.
