Bag Seed CFL Closet Grow Journal - First Grow - 2Guys1GrowRoom

Me and a friend have decided to bring a 10 day old plant that was vegging inside a small box in my room to his house as he wanted to make his own grow anyways. We transplanted the plant (titled Black Betty) from a small margarine container that contained Miracle-Gro into a 2kg bucket with really cheap soil from Walmart and Pearlite (approximately 10:1-10:2 soil:pearlite). We then hung three 26W soft white CFL bulbs and a 13W CFL bulb that we found in his closet.

For the grow room we laid down 2 layers of garbage bag in a small room in the back of his closet. We then placed a humidifier inside to control humidity and hung a shelf to hang the lights and the wires for the humidifier, fan, lights and some sort of bug repellent. The lights are tied down through the metal bars over the plant and taped in place to stop them from swaying because of the fan.

These are pictures of the current grow room and plant at day 10. I will try to get pictures of tonight (day 11).

A humidifier, that's a first for me...not a bad idea i guess.

You could put a clear glass over the plant like a dome to keep the humidity in...

Plant looks good, light distance is good.

Cheers,

Thanks SilverSerf, it was a dehumidifier as I figured the room was too humid (was at 39% running the dehumidifier but it's a POS, no telling what it really was).
The plant was looking good, however today it appeared to start drooping more and the leaves started curling upwards (note upwards, not downwards). I can't tell yet for sure but I think they may also be yellowing. I read that this could be a number of problems, including light burn (improbable with a CFL) and too low of humidity. I took the precautions of raising my lights and removing the dehumidifer.
Anyone have any suggestions? Also, my soil is retaining way too much moisture, how can I prevent this? We added about 4-5 cups of Pearlite, yet the plant continues to droop and the soil continues to be moist. Any more suggestions?

Also, pertaining to germinating seeds, should I store them in a cool or hot area?

Dirt no good for first time grower as we tend to over water...plus that dirt is made to hold in water. You should pick up some good dirt with nutes already in it from a garden store or something and mix a little perl in. Wouldn't use the dehumidifier (don't forget about electricity). You prob. don't even need it unless your like 70% or so...50% is perfect from what I've learned but 40% prob. isn't bad either. I wouldn't back up on your lights too much or things may get worse. Just keep them no more than 5" away 2-3" is best...as I've heard on RIU before from someone...(crap I really wish I remembered their name) "I keep my CFL's close....but my CFL's closer" LOL . Seeds should be kept in a cool dry place. Not cold or hot....either extreme is no good but it's really up to you. I just keep mine in a zip lock baggie in my top dresser drawer. I'm on my first grow with cfl's and I got 3/3 females with the bagseed I've been saving for years so it must be ok in there :) And try not to over water....do the ol' lift the pot trick and water when it's light :) Good luck with your grow I'm sub'd in!

We grabbed the soil at the time because it was cheap (we only had like 10$ and pearlite itself was $4.98 without tax.) and we weren't sure the appropriate nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium numbers for marijuana (most soils were like 0.17-0.2 for each number). What are the levels required?
We're going to be germinating seeds at my house from now on as we figure his house is not a good environment for them (4 seeds have been germinating for 3 days, not one has popped, whereas at my house the 3 seeds popped within 2 days).

Thanks for your sub! :)..

EDIT: What are the cheapest nutes and ferts I can get that will work? Do I need them?

Depending on your pot size you could go a week without water, especially when the plant is real small since it's not actually drinking much of the water. A mature plant on the other hand can suck a gallon a day.

When i have small plants in large pots i sometimes give them a small watering just around the plant to make sure the poor little seedling doesn't dry out. This way the whole pot doesn't stay soaked all the time inviting nasties but baby stays moist. I find a sprayer is good enough for this, couple of 5 squirts around the base and a misting is ususally good.

Not sure about the cheapest nutes but GH flora nova series works and is a all in one so you don't have to buy three bottles.

You can probly get something at wally world that would work in soil....i've never really tried..just go easy till you learn how they react.

Cheers,

Just buy your basic plant food rich in nitrogen for when they veg and a bloom feed or bloom booster for when they are flowering, schultz makes a good plant food and mg makes a bloom booster both are cheap. Just try not to go too cheap on the dirt K? If you use a good dirt with ferts in it, you shouldn't need to add any till about 3-4 weeks after you do your transplant (in small amounts at first). Here's a few links that may help you out along your grow :) Good luck and remember not to over-do it....it's just a weed after all :)

I was talking just last night to a veteran grower and they explained the nutes to me along with how terrible my soil is haha. At the moment there are some things going on and I will be out of town for a considerable amount of time and away from the plant. If the plant maintains life until I get back in town, I will post updates on it.

Apparently she fell over and died the day I left town ): poor baby died of loneliness (Or suffered at the hands of an even more inexperienced grower than I).
Sadly, I do not believe I will be moving back unless I am willing to throw college out the door. However, expect an outdoor grow this summer and an indoor grow of some sorts sometimes around November-October if all goes according to plan (When does it, anyways?). If I can, however, move back and later on attend college, this grow will be back on (most likely going to shell out another $100-200 CAD for additional lights in that case). Up until then, I suppose I will have to get a job and buy my bud... Which is a shame considering an eighth of SHAKE is $40.

Peace & Pot be with you all!
