The ''moonflower'' cactus is a japanese concocted freak grafted to a dragonfruit (hylocereus) stock. pop it off (it will die) and the dragonfruit will grow very quickly and end up producing fruit late summer (very delicious). The bottom right is a subspecies of mammalaria (http://www.google.com/imgres?q=mammillaria&um=1&hl=en&safe=off&sa=N&biw=1366&bih=638&tbm=isch&tbnid=g9SyJEs741KYmM:&imgrefurl=http://mendoncajose1.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html&docid=XHUpOhUsk0jyKM&imgurl=http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_vhBzu4WmuMg/SJtirx5CR0I/AAAAAAAAB8g/0mv6_fk9_oM/s400/mammillaria.jpg&w=349&h=400&ei=ZcEtT8vzMKfL0QHK45D9Cg&zoom=1) which produces very pretty white or pink flowers. The round spike leafed one to the left is named differently depending on where you are, mostly known as hens and chicks or hens and biddies (a type of Crassulaceae). That one should be repotted; they produce runners to reproduce, and will overtake your pot and kill all the others within a year or two.

The moonflower is genetically altered and must be grafted to survive, but they are extremely abundant during the summer months at both walmart and lowe's; you can pick up 3 or 4 for about ten dollars and sacrifice the funky colorful balls for the dragonfruit stocks to start your hylocereus plants. It will take a good year for them to grow (they look like triangular sausage links, and need a trellace to grow properly) and will have to be brought indoors for the winter (they hibernate nicely in a cool dark closet). The mammilaria will bloom during the hottest months usually, but they explode with a dozen to several dozen flowers at once. You'll have a bit of fun with them. Enjoy!

I forgot to mention that the hens and chicks is frost hardy and does well outdoors year round. :)

thats awesome!!! thanks nice to know. i live in zone 7 with temperate weather, they would be perfect to fill my planters out front.
i see prickly pears that span a few feet across over here so it makes sense.

you can enjoy the moonflower indefinitely if you regraft it. Search for pereskiopsis, cuttings root like weeds and grow scions faster than any other stock out there.

i have been stuck by SO many prickly pears i won't go near them anymore. they make nice jellies though.

@warreng...love the ensamble of cacti. the tall palmlike plant i call "marge" for short. dracaena marginata. they last forever. i've seen them planted in the ground in florida. the trunks can be braided with a lot of time and patience. and i really like that little "tomato" on the window sill ;-)
