~~~~~paging GrnMn~~~~~
just knocked a branch off the jade (a fairly sizeable fork, too - one with 6 "leaves", the other 10 or so)...... can i "clone" it or something? i'm gonna try anyways - should i or shouldn't i use a rooting hormone?
i'll take a pic once i finish with the inconsolable sobbing. (;))
Hey kitty, have no fear. Jade loves standard or moderately arid soil, and roots easier than a cactus. Let the broken branch sit for a day on the shelf, then remove the bottom most leaves (if applicable) and submerge in wet soil. If the bottom aeroles (nodes) are already void of leaves, don't fret, and plant anyway. For BEST results, plant down far enough for one leaf to be nearly submerged in soil. Not only will the stalk root, but a new plant will grow from that aerole (node). It will be fine, jade propagates by dropping branches and or leaves ;)
good to know! i didn't know about the dropping branches thing - i thought it was weird because i didn't bump it on anything, it just fell right off when i picked up the pot to move it. i feel a bit less like i've pulled it's arm out of its socket now. *phew*
is there a reason for the day on the shelf? i panicked and put it in a shotglass of water (whilst having misigivings because of the whole wet/dry thing) -- should i take it out?
sweet -- it's a forked branch so if i plant it to the bottom leaves of each side i'll already have the makings for twins. :)
thanks for your help fellas - like wtf? i don't even panic like this when shit goes pear-shaped with the girls. you shoulda seen me freak out over my living rock. :lol:
NOOOOOOOO!!!
No water until it calluses. The reason for leaving is the inner portion needs to dry to a skin (callus) to be water tight and infection proof. Cacti take a few weeks, but jade takes only a day or so; as soon as the cut/break is smooth to the touch, it's ready to be planted. Most cacti take 2-6 weeks to callus properly...
yes, remove it from the water, and forget setting it out now; go ahead and plant it. If the broken stalk is damaged, it will probably die and rot off to the next aerole, but that one will root and the shoot will continue to grow. Make sure that there are live aeroles (nodes) below the soil line, and keep it moderately wet until new leaves grow (1-3 weeks).
As for your lithops, what happened to it? I love baby toes....
*panics* okok, i took it out and will plant it momentarily.
ah the teeeeeny tiny lithops that rooted in the pot of a different plant that i brought home from a nursery with an extensive succulent section.....
the plant in question (don't even remember which one now) was in the clearance section so it needed weeding when i brought it home, and whilst doing so, i noticed that one of the "weeds" had a different texture to it, lo and behold it was a tiiiiiiny living rock, so i planted it, nursed it, and then went away camping for a long weekend and it shriveled up..... *sigh*
i suspect it was shedding this branch -- i just looked at the branch it came off of and it's totally healed already.
plant it and go on. it'll root.
I challenge the, oh kitty of the mellow; I shall start a jade cutting the size of yours, and we will see who can nurse one to a 3' bush first! (beware, this will take a few years...)
btw, just noticed.... That dirt isn't wet enough... soak it, and set it in a shady partial sun window. It'll start growing new leaves in (let me consult my turban).....
8 days!
It's tougher with cacti, believe me... With them, you cut, store on a shelf in a dark closet for a month, then pot in dry sand for up to 6 months to trick out roots, only allowing medium sunlight while maintaining summer temps...
with jade, let it dry for a day (less if you're impatient, as long as the break/cut isn't weeping) then plant in moist soil.
If you can kill a cactus, you're doing something very very wrong.... if you can kill a jade, you must have gone on a one year vacation!
the lofty goal (from aforementioned nursery)
See that kitty? That's that three footer I was talking about. I'll omit my 6 year old, and use my new cutting, or make a new one. We'll make a thread, update annually, keep peeps interested......
lol.
