Do you count flowering from 12/12 switch or when you see pistil hairs?

I really dont see what difference it makes on when you call it. Harvest is done according to when the plants are ready not how long they have been flowering.

They don't immediately flower when you go 12/12, I dont count until I see the start of flowering.

But the number of weeks they flower and keeping count really doesn't mean much. The buds are ripe when they are ripe, I wouldn't pick based on many weeks, just when they are ready

Retorical question becasue each variation is diffrent. If you "lock in" various flowering times IE so many days from start of 12/12 etc.... it depends on what you want...you can do it so many ways , like lets say you need to kind of "rush" becasue you need it now kind of you could always do lets say 8 ON/16 OFF and get some real nice results maybe not as big as 12/12 but how about 2 to 3 weeks earlier..if you can turn a crop around that much quicker you can offset the loss in 30% yield...all the old timers know what a mature plant looks like ...bottom leaves all yellowed and the buds basically almost half way dried ..thats what most look for....I say go 4 ON / 20 OFF and they will be ready in 3 weeks flat after veggin ...also helps to have a shitload of watts too:weed:
I was wondering how do you count the flowering days.

Do you count from 12/12 switch from 18/6

Or

Do you start counting flowering days when you first see pistils?

I always have started counting the flowering period from when I see the first pistils, however I recently have seen a few people counting flowering period from when they switch from 18/6 to 12/12.

see I figured if I switch from 18/6 to 12/12 then it takes a further 10 days for the plant to show sex and I counted them days as the flowering period, that means I could harvest 10 days early as I counted them 10 days as flowering perid, just when the plant will put its weight on in the last 2 weeks.

I hope that makes sense.

Please Feel free to contribute to the thread & leave comments.

I totally agree with Bigv1976, but to begin "counting" your days in flowering, one would generally wait until the lighting changes, i.e. when you set your lights to a 12/12 photoperiod... Thatz how I gauge how much of a spectrum to give mine, and at what point, and a shit-ton of watts from a mixed MH and mainly HPS ratio, it absolutely does produce the very best, top-shelf nugs, no doubt, and it all really does come down to when your individual plant shows peak ripeness, through the coloration of the tric's, not in any number of weeks, or in what percentage of the stigmas are discolored, or any of that...

when you switch to 12 12

if your plant is not mature

you will wait untill maturity before seeing flowers

can swith all you want means nutin til maturity

i dont want to start nutin wit the 12 12 peeps but even them they say
you swith and then you wait til its ready to flower
false you are causing stress forcing plants to a false maturity
it will come quicker under 12 12
but again wont see pistils til matur or
stressed into a false maturity

i say flower time from pistils if 12 12 before maturity
if after maturity i guess could say from 12 12

i hope this makes sence to you it does to me
i have experimented wit 12 12

when you start the 12/12/ is when you start counting. But harvesting "early" is entirely up to the grower. Use the count to know when your about ready then Use a pocket microscope and check the trichromes to see if your actually ready for harvest. Good luck. you can get one at radioshack for around $12
I would totally disagree.. I always tell people to Never start counting the Bloom days until 1-2 wks from flip.. Now one of us is wrong.. & it's not the mod. <3

my girls are 18 days from 12/12 flip with nice pistil balls & trichomes forming, some smell.. They are on wk 1 of bloom entering wk 2. (in my head)..

PJ Diaz is correct, though usually we are not talking to gurus with state of the art setups here on RIU. So I highly doubt ppl looking for advice on what day there plant is of bloom should be counting from day of the 12/12 flip.

if Everyone began counting on day 1 of 12/12.. most strains rated for 8wks would go 10.. and those that say 10 would go 12..

But don't breeders wait for preflowers, where as alot of home growers force flower their plants, inwhich case its from 2 weeks after 12/12 starts when it shows sex :D
Well, sure if you try to flower something from seed that's not mature enough yet, it will force itself to mature before it flowers. However in the case of clones, this isn't usually the case, assuming you cloned a mature plant. My six inch clones show sex the same time as a fully mature plant after the 12/12 switch.

Breeders count from the start of 12/12.
did a breeder tell you that

did he also tell you they dont flower until plant is mature

im testing myself this grow i dont know any of the printed and spoken times

im harvesting by looks when plants look a certain way to me i swith to water and molasses
then when close to finish i judge by looks of plant
all signals leaes pistils buds color starts to change to a worm glow like a sun tan
then last stages i pull out my scope to varify chop time
i want like about 5 percent amber for me

This is so stupid.

Take 2 cuttings. Grow 'em together under exact conditions.
Will they be done at the exact same time? No.
Growing isn't an exact science.
Breeders only offer guesstimates on times.

They're done when they're done. Period.

Just to keep track of the time frame, a lot of people count from the day of the photo period switch but that's not really accurate for counting actual "flowering days".

Not mature enough??, like every equatorial sativa? or hybrid there off?,just cus some one says that a plant needs to be 3 months old before you take cuttings off it n flower them doesnt make it fact, most of the equator ie where all the original landrace apart from like afghan come from, only get like 10-14/14/10 light dark,so that is a misconception that your plant isnt mature enough, maturity is about plant hormones not age at all,a plant is ready when its ready, forcing is a term used in indoor growing.
I personally 12/12 70-90% sativas, and cant be asked with keeping mums and clones when I get my seeds free/dirt cheap and like to try multiple varietys, while only smokin a pure or 2 a nite,I dont need more than 10g a week, which is easily achivable, infact I never run out as thats how it should be,

Yep, if I just had to have a "countdown" of sorts, I'd wait until I saw some bud formations, but like a few others have said, it ain't ready until it's ready, i.e. it will tell you throuogh trichome coloration and swollen calyxs, and not any set "week count"...

My ladies showed there sex in veg so as soon as i switched i started to count. If this wasnt the case i would start to count as soon as she showed me her sex in flower....
