Bad bill passes committee in Michigan​
Dear XXXXX:

A bill that would remove glaucoma from the list of qualifying conditions in Michigan cleared a key legislative committee Tuesday. The bill, SB 977, was approved by the Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee and is sponsored by the chairman of that committee, Sen. Rick Jones (R-Grand Ledge).

Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes increased fluid pressure within the eye and can lead to blindness. Placebo-controlled studies have indicated that marijuana is able to lower intra-ocular pressure in some glaucoma patients as much as 27%.
Jones’ effort to strip glaucoma from Michigan’s voter-approved law is based on testimony that some patients who use marijuana may discontinue use of other medicines like eyedrops. Undoubtedly, patients using medical marijuana should not discontinue other therapies without consulting their doctors, but these concerns can be addressed in other ways, such as mandating a warning that patients not cease other therapies.
Please stop what you’re doing and ask your elected officials to oppose this unnecessary legislation. Thanks!

Wow. Thanks for the info. The Supreme Court of the United States granted a lady the right to use Marijuana to treat her glaucoma. The court ruled that there was proof that she could have gone blind without it. She is one of the very few people in the country that gets her pot from the federal government. Now this is an absolute attack on MMA 2008. Whats next? An epileptic patient may stop taking their pharmaceuticals in favor of marijuana. This sounds ridiculous and I wonder what pharmaceutical company contributed to his election campaign. This is straight up bullshit.

Exactly! Just follow the money. I'm sure this Rick Jones cat is in bed with some big pharmaceutical company.

this has made it thru senate judiciary, it must still pass out of senate with 75% passing vote, and THEN must do the same in the House of Reps, again with 75% yea vote to pass.

so while its out of judiciary, its still got a long haul to get to the law books.

That is why many of use are fighting in the House of Reps. the Senate is Repub controlled. almost anything the repubs want will get out of the senate likely. but it MUST go thru the HOuse too. where the party lines are much much tighter. ie way better chance to kill a 75% super majority in the House of Reps than in the Senate atm.

I doubt it will pass too. The problem with the stated logic is that cannabis may cause people to quit using other meds. If you approve based on that, then 'pain" is out as a reason for cannabis (plenty of presciption pain meds) Cancer is out (plenty pof anti convulsion meds) Basically, if you use his logic..every condition is out, because effective or not, big pharma has something for everyone.

The whole idea of medical cannabis is to offer an alternative to prescription meds.

Alrighty then, I'll work on my Rep. I know her, not personally, but I will speak to her. She is against MMJ, but nothing ventured nothing gained. And we might be able to change her attitude about it.

Does anyone have the docket number or article about the glaucoma patient and the supreme court? It would be handy when I'm talking to my rep.

Winter. Tread Slowly with her. it is Easy to take a anti and further solidify their anti means.

I would see what it is she has the largest issues about it. then offer studies, Drs reports ect, legal info that can show the misconception she has. Last thing you want to do is to tell a rep they are Wrong. you have to agree with them but do so in a way that gets your viewpoint across...


If you would like to do this with some help, I would be More than happy to assist you. I have a few folks i can put her in contact with, including other Reps in Lansing...

I gotta wonder how many cannabis using glaucoma patients, that would be affected by this legislation, Rick Jones actually talked to before introducing this bill.

Big Pharmaceutical is obviously the chief suspect Puppet Master behind this. I'd like to see a spotlight shined on these medical associations who chose to push legislation instead of raising awareness.

Call Representative Cavenaugh or Representative Irwin. Talk with them. Rep Cavenaugh Is on the House Task Force that just wrapped up dealing with the 08 MMM Act. Speak with these 2 Reps about who has been working for the Patients.

You dont have to believe me, thats fine, but perhaps you can speak with a couple of the House Reps that are FULLY BEHIND the MMM Act as what it is supposed to do, and talk to them about WHO and What organizations are talking about implementation before any changes should be made to the Act.

you could also call Rep Walsh (House of Reps Chair of Judiciary) or perhaps 2nd chair Rep Meadows. now Walsh is a Republican, the other 3 mentioned are Democrats.
