Hydroponic Nutrition Help

Hi guys,

I am a new hydroponic grower, I builded a little hydroponic system that look like the picture bellow, it is not real but it looks exactly the same, the only difference is that the pump is not in the water. I know how to grow but the part that I don`t get is nutrition, I know that in the vegetative period it`s 20-20-20 and in the flowering it`s around 10-30-10. My question may be stupid but please answer me correctly, my question is that were do you put the fertilizer ( in the water or in the cube) and my other question is after I get the nutrition part, Am it ready to grow or I need to know something else.

Bye

If you have that built exactly, then you are ready sir. And you add the nutrients to the water. You want to top off the water with normal water, no nutes, as it gets low, and once you have replaced about half of the total water, completely empty it and refill and read nutes, do not top off with nutes. Shoudl average about every 10-20 days before a complete refill.

Also if this is your first grow, I recommend buying a line of nutrients with a mix chart rather than trying to make your own, but just a suggestion. I like the http://technaflora.com/ line, its easy to use and great for begginers. If you ask for it at any grow store they should have it, as well as a really nice kit, with every nute needed (will only last one cycle) thats only about 40 bucks, great way to start off and figure it all out.

Everyone will have their nutes. I personally like the Lucas formula, but that doesn't take anything away from what Josh has to say. You might consider running a little chlorine bleach to keep the bad critters at bay. A few drops per gallon should do ya

I was just reading a good thread about bleach. Apparently a lot of industrial growers use it. Do a search for "bleach hydro" up in the top right. Read it. Very informative.

Just use the cheap laundry bleach that doesn't have scents and whatnot. While I don't know why having good smelling reservoir is a bad thing, people that have done more research on that sort of thing than I say so.

read the post i put. the author of the one i put is a mod on this site and has been helping this site for over 10 years. unlike your input he backs his with chemical science.

Read the link I posted, and the post he linked. Fat somebodyorother is very informative, and he did drop mad science. The only evidence that I have besides what I already threw at you is anecdotal in nature.
And mad rep to Al, but being a mod doesn't mean shit. All of the information he puts up seems legit, but the fact that he moderates doesn't hold water as an argument.

lol you dont even have a single started thread on here. not worth the argument.

Not starting a thread, and being a mod, are niether reasons for credibility, both are 100% irrelevant.

That being said, I agree 100% with bigz.

The way I see it. Bleach and H202 are both cheap as shit if you buy in bulk. They both work similar, but H202 has the added benefit of being a food safe product to begin with and it is a great aerator. Why bother with bleach at all?

Also the way that h202 breaks down stuff it releases oxygen for your roots.

Bleach is less likely to burn your roots, and gets rid of baddies with way less ppm than h2o2. Also, they say h2o2 will burn your hands if you don't wear gloves when handeling.
As far as being food safe, every time I poor a glass of water, I drink chlorine. Same with all the other city slickers out there.

Pdo what youvare gunna do, but the professional gardeners use chlorine. The city water people use chlorine. The only people who don't use chlorine are people who tell you not to in a weed growing forum.
Palso, that guy still only has 1 post... wonder if he will be back, or has this all been for naught?

Back to the topic of the OP.

Just be sure to use a good well balanced nutrient line up for hydro and you should be good. (this will probably be controversial but) plants seem to know what they want. By this I mean they take out of the nutrient solution what they want and leave the rest behind. So even if you don't mix your nutrients in the proper ratios (not saying you should do this on purpose) as long as you change your Rez every couple weeks you'll be fine.
Reading your PH and PPM's can tell a grower alot about what the plant wants. (PPM first) If your at 1000 PPM and a day later your solution drops to 800, your plants are taking up more nutrients then they are water. So I would raise the PPM of my nutrient solution. If your at 1200 and as your water level goes down your PPM stays the same, then your at a good solution rate. I would still do a regiment of Rez changes cause PPM doesn't tell you what the plants are taking up and what's being left behind. And you don't won't your solution to build up a high PPM of something the plants don't want. Thus a regiment of Rez changes is ideal.
(Now PH) Though the ideal PH is 5.8, a gradual PH swing from 5.5 to 6.1 works great. The reason for this is some nutrients are better used at lower PH while others at a higher PH (google "nutrient uptake chart"). Also as a plant uses up the nutrients the PH raises because hydro nutrients lower the PH of the solution. So when I mix a fresh Rez of nutrients I PH it to 5.5. Then let it raise as the plants use up the nutrients to 6.1 at which point I lower it back to the 5.5 PH mark.
