calling out to the cat whisperer???

Ok so my cat will do this very often, he rubs against your leg, you bend down and pet him on his head/back and he purrs, and absolutely out of nowhere (with no body changes that show hes getting annoyed) he bites and scratches. IDK what to do

and he def. knows that it pisses us off because he runs away after doing it for a few seconds. Nobody is abusing him so idk where the aggresivness is coming from.

im thinking of just giving him a swat in the ass and throwing him in his cage for a couple hours every time he does it now. Would that be effective? or would it make things worse?

some cats just do that , its like they just cant help it , ive had loads of cats and i know of at least 10 of them that do the exact same thing , its like there enjoying it , but something suddenly clicks and they bite , its weird and i dont actually know why they do it , i just know lots of cats do .

I had a cat that would do that to pretty much everybody, but it didn't bite or scratch hard, it just wanted to play. And i'm also pretty sure my cat was retarded. I had a few cats before and this one wasn't near normal. Some cats are just weird.

Some cats have sensitive skin and may enjoy the petting at first but after a few minutes it may become irritating. It could be the cat's way of saying, "enough!"

my cat does that. he's so affectionate but if you rub his neck too long he spins around and gets you. he requests the love then makes you pay. sometimes he uses claws and teeth, sometimes not. i'm pretty sure he's just being playful but my cat has separate aggression issues so i get nervous. he put me in the ER in jan and for the past few months i've been educating myself on ways to deal with him.

if i were you i would simply not bend down to pet the cat for a while. make eye contact and use your cutesy voice but only use your hand to let him smell you. DO NOT do the swat and cage deal. it will be completely ineffective and will only rile him. when he starts to act weird have a laser pointer or feather on a stick type toy handy to distract him and let him get it out of his system.

this has done wonders for my cat. up until 2 weeks ago i was NEVER without the laser pointer in my pocket. whenever he gets "that look" i just distract him with that and all is good. it also helps to exercise the cat half to death so they just want to flop over and sleep.

also, watch a few episodes of "my cat from hell" on animal planet. dude is like the cat whisperer. he points out all the things the owners are inadvertently doing to make the cat nutty. one of his big suggestions to everyone is to make sure the cat has easy access to high places because it makes the cat feel more secure. and the cats on that show are FUCKED UP.

pick the cat up by the nape of it's neck and scream as loud as you can in it's face. Then, gently set the cat down. That's how you whisper what you want in behavior to a cat.

There are probably subtle cues you are not quite picking up on. Annoyance shows in cats' eyes and ears... they are hard to read. It's like learning people all over again. I wouldn't do the swat and cage thing. Cats don't learn that way.

Also, some cats are played with when young with the hands in a way that makes them think of the hands as play things. Try just holding your leg or foot up and letting him rub against you. One of my cats vastly prefers feet to hands, because I played with her aggressively when she was a kitten all the time. (Not hurting her, just wrestling and letting her grapple my hand and arm) That cat will do what you describe sometimes, but she's gotten a lot better about it as we've learned to accomodate her needs by providing a foot or a leg or even an elbow to rub against instead. Cats like to be in control of affection and get it on their terms, not yours.

All cats should be spayed and neutered. Tons of cats are put to death every day in shelters because of negligence in this regard.

And cat-nip is like PCP for the cat I described above... stay the hell away from cats on catnip unless you know how to read it and have a good relationship. It will just complicate things at this phase, and I don't recommend it at all.

This is great advice too. Just learn to work with your cat, instead of expecting it to be a certain way. Not all cats like to be pet by hand... some don't like to be pet at all. Some like to be picked up. Some do not. Etc. etc.

Aggressive tactics DO NOT work on cats. They are prideful animals. They will not take it well, and you'll probably end up giving the cat away to a shelter (where it will be killed) because you didn't know how to approach it properly. Please be kind to your kitty.

yes, the er. he has really bad fear aggression and he just bugged the fuck out because i tripped and bumped my face on the dresser. the commotion sent him to the moon and he came at me while i was still on the floor. i had a black eye and the backs of my legs were were like a lion ate them. i had to run out of my apartment and go to the lady downstairs to get a ride. when he gets like that i can't go near him for hours. i made the poor lady's kitchen look like a crime scene. so much blood. one of the wounds drained for almost 2 months.

99.999% of the time he's the friendliest snuggliest cat you'd ever meet. friendly and social with company, always purring. just has some screws loose. most cats with fear aggression will just puff up and hiss or even hide. this fucker goes absolutely apeshit and tries to kill everyone and he's stuck that way for hours. sometimes even the next day he's still not quite right. since the last episode i've been doing some desensitization type stuff and so far so good. i've read more about cat behavior than i ever knew existed and there's lots of techniques to get cats to ackrite.

i still have one of the bags of soil next to my flower room and the freak still puffs up and walks sideways every time he sees it...
