Weirdest root problem ever.

Hey all, I'll get a camera soon to take a picture of this.

I lifted my 30 day old plants outta the tub I'm using today to check root growth, as growth and root growth in general has been VERY slow.

Water temperature has been between 60-70. PH drifts slowly between 5.5 and 5.8. I have four air pumps that are rated for 100 litre fish tanks pushing air through 4 x 6" air stones.

I am using Advanced A+B PH perfect nutes and something alled propigator and some super thrive.

PPM is at 600.

I have had almost NO root development in the last two weeks. Had some long stringy ones head down into the tank real quick then almost nothing else. LIke 5 roots hangin down from each plant into the res water. I ran a second course of the propigator (roots exellerant type thing) for the last four days and roots took off but get no longer than an inch from the basket and then just kinda stop growing. They are not hairy looking roots.

I Have had some random burning that looks like over nutes, but that started at 300ppm.

The long roots I do have are slightly brown (Kinda seems like it'd be from the b's. . not like disgusting brown, no weird smell. Not like rotting, just kinda like metal ??

Anyway. . the plants have been stable and under a 600watt MH for three weeks and they aren't even 8" tall yet.

Now THIS is the part I haven't ever heard anything about.

Today when I pulled them out I thought for sure I had root rot.

There were blak spots on any root that was hanging at least to the solution. The roots that were new from the propigator are all very white and seem to look good.

Now the weird part was I had read how root rot was slimey, well my black spots aren't slimey and I an easily remove them from the roots with my fingers. The weird part is, it seems like the stuff that comes off is lint.

Like it's. . like wet lint, take a tiny piece of lint from the lint trap in the dryer, wet it. that's whats hanging from my roots.

but wtf?? I have been very clean all through and I an't imagine where the lint stuff would have come from.

I have grown in SUNHINE and PROMIX before and had MUCH faster growth. So it seems like the plants are being affected.

What the heck is going on. I probably shouldn't have smoked before I wrote this, so I hope it's not one of thos rambly annoying posts. . but this is strange and I googled the shit out of it with no success other than there is some kind of stringy fungus that can affect plants, but nothing saying this type of fungus happens in hydro.

Seriously, pull the little lint ball outta your belly button, soak it and fling it at your roots. That's what I got goin on.

Anyone?

Ok so I pulled one of the air stones out to airate some tap water 20 litres with 45ml of 35% h202 for 12 hours. I do this , then ph adjust to 6.2 and add nutes and it usually ends up at 5.5ph.

Now there was more of this stuff growing right on the air stones. So because my tank isn't airtite I am thinking this stuff is algae?

IT was lint like, but appeared more browny green on the air stone. It smelled like seaweed whe nI rubbed it off the air stone onto my fingers and smelled it.

What to do all?

I'm not a hydro guy but I would use something like hygrozyme or cannazyme to kill any possible algae and to break down anything dead on those roots and go from there.

I use Advanced Nuts also, but I use the Grow, Micro, Bloom.
I get this too sometimes, a dark brown, very light sediment, right?

Do you also use B-52?

I think it's some sort of reaction between the B-52 and the other nutes that does it.

There was no detrimental effects to my plants because of it.

are you using anything with sea kelp?

Nope No Kelp. Just Sensi Grow A+B PH perfect formula - and Plantlife Products Super B+ and Plantlife Products Prop-O-Gator - A roots growth enhancer.

I think what I"ll do is switch from the tub to buckets, drop the b+ and prop-o-gator incase they are reacting with my nutes as stated above and by some hygrozyme (I am tottaly broke for another week so this unfortunately may have to wait.

The Buckets will be light Proof, No reaction between the nutes and the B+ so this should eliminate algae.

THanks for the idea's guys, it's kind of what I had been forming, but I actually am still not sure it's algae, but it must be as it's not root rot from what I can tell.

When I get everything fixed up I'll take some pics of roots and plants immediately after they are to be placed in new buckets and then again a week later, and then again a week later just to show you guys that your help either worked or didn't. Anyway I just made me a pancake with shake in it. . mmmm4

Who has an airtight hydro system anyway? Light and oxygen depletion enhance algae blooms. I would break the system down and scrub clean and then fill with 1:1000 Clorox/Water. Let sit 20 minutes then drain and rinse well.

Root rot or mosaic virus. Black spots are symptoms.

You have root rot or slime or both. Reason I gave up on DWC and went to coco. I even had a res chiller on my second grow and still got root rot again.

For me this turned out to be algae. The key to tipping me off was the PH was rising extremely fast and upon closer inspection of the mess it appeared algae like. As well my res temps are at 68f so I dont think rot was an issue. Regardless I am using UC roots right now and that shit is clearing up fast and new roots are exploding into the drink.
