Nice looking Lady's bro.
After reading everything sound like your CFL is to far away. Is this 200 actual watts or 200 w equivalent bulb ? making I think like a 54 actual watt cfl.
Either way lol Take your hand and put it right next to the side of the bulb and when you can leave it and not burn that's the point your top leaves should be 1' under.

I would guess 2 to 4 inches at most. just a guess.
Use the side of bulb for light and hoods are everything with cfl's (Contain & Direct the light) There cfl's heat should not be a big deal.

Just thinking have fun and grow hard... Yep...

Thx, This is the bulb they are under http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200w-Dual-Spectrum-CFL-hydroponics-grow-light-lamp-bulb-/270888810628?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Garden_PlantsSeedsBulbs_JN&hash=item3f123b3884 not sure if its 200watt actual watts? Any ideas? the box didnt say. I can get my hand within about an inch of the light and it it doesnt burn but when i lower the light the plants leaves look like they start to look dry around the edges and crimple up ? Could this be the light issue or water issue mentioned previously?If its more likely to be water then ill lower the lamp again, i dont want them stretching.

My fan died and my plants under 8x23w cfl's burned. Not like fire, but they got damaged badly. I grew them out. I noticed that the plants with the most damage originally produced smaller buds. I revamped my veg area that is on top of my dresser. It's the size of a 1'x2' tray. I grow 'em to about 12"-15" tall before I flower. Another thing I noticed is that clones (different strains) received more damage than seedlings... I don't know why that would be, but it was. When I put them in flower I tried the hand trick to test the heat from my 400w HPS. That doesn't work either. Burned a plant that I was ripening in the 12th week of flower. Now toasted bud leaves. 15" is my distance wether it be CFL or HID. Also, don't let fans fail. I now keep 2 cheap fans going at all times and things are better. Just my 2 cents.

Just phoned basement lighting to enquire about the bulb to see if that was 200watt equivalent or actual wattage , and the guy said its 200 watt equivalent but 194 watt actual??? little confused , is this possible?

Am i also right in thinking that i could use these bulbs for sidelighting? http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/light-bulbs/general-electric-ge-energy-saving-bulb-b22-bc-23w/invt/0290408/?htxt=2ETQhJd8X0S7IY+eqPNk3RxcUIlqI8DqiVFfYAXYlNaxhZPdocpbhhX8lYTffi2UGZIlQL3CfhOC ffCf0EMTMg==

Thats because the guy was straight up with you (on the level, telling the truth :D). its a good thing.... The bulb is 200 Actual watts (manufacturers round up, a 1000W HPS is only actualy 980~ Watts....).

CFL's use a stupid equivalency ratio. a 23W CFL is the equivalent of a 60W incandescent light bulb. incandescent bulbs are very inefficent, they only release 30~ lumens/ watt. CFL's make around 75 Lumens / Watt and HPS get around 120 Lumens / watt.

The short answer: your 200W lights are good 200W lights. it releases about 13,000 initial lumens / 200 Watts.

Those are the same kind of bulbs i buy. i like the 23W because you can use Y socket splitters from home depot or lowes and make a powerful light with them, safely.

^ This is the reason the closest CFL's ever get to my plants is 6 inches. if something goes wrong with the chains, fans Ect there is room for the plants to be safe. Heat withh dwarf plants and cause ireversible damage.

Do you pay that much for them? Seems a little pricey to me...

Is there a big difference between those bulbs and these

Besides it not being a spiral? And besides it being 20w vs 23w? The rest of the specs seem the same.

i live out in the boonies, way out in the back 40 lol... i end up spending around $8.50 CAD / bulb :(

GBP to CAD is 1:1.5 so 4.50 = $7.25~

the Lumens on the 20W bulbs are alot lower than the 23W's for the extra 3w's of power.

20W = 1100 Lumens
23W = 1500 Lumens

Good points. I guess I tend to look at things more like, lumens/dollar(or sterling in this case). I know that's not always the best way to look at it, especially when you're trying to jam as much light in one place as you can.

The 20w would be 552 lumen per GBP
The 23w would be 300 lumen per GBP

If the 20w was some off brand then I would (personally) go with the 23w GE bulb, but seeing as they're both GE bulbs, I (personally) would get the 20w considering they're less than half the price.

EDIT: What does the "back 40" refer to? (never mind I looked it up)

What you have is a 42- actual watt--200 watt equivalent CFL pumping out Around 3500 to 5000 lumens.
Actualy we have allready figured this one out..... goto the Ebay link.... the Bulb has a 200W attached ballast and 6x 35W tubes, it has an actual Wattge input of 194 Watts....

OK.. have fun with that.. sorry I tried..sensitive toes here I guess
i didn't mean to sound like an Ahole, but we had already figured out that part of it and conflicting information tends to confuse new growers.

Sorry if i offended you. hopefully we can just move on and help the newbie out :hump:

will the heat be ok in this for 2 200watt cfls? i dont want to start a fire.
You could easily run 600+ watts in there as long as it is vented.

you don't have to worry about fire unless there is a problem with your equipment. do an Equipment check every time you are around, if a ballast or light is worrying you, you can allways unplug and check it out. i have been growing for a long time, with due diligence i have never had a fire or major electrical problem.

P.S: you dont need to buy expensive Vortex fans to have good ventilation for 600+ Watts of CFL. my 400 Watt tent uses one of these.
