I always use the paper towel method, just make sure to not let it dry out or it will kill the seeds. Are you buying fox farm soil or nutrients?

fox farm soil. i am debating on putting them in pots or just digging holes in my backyard
If you want to move them around then pots if not then the ground.I'm in SoCal also and I get budworms so get some caterpillar killer. They mess your crop up bad.I use safer brand caterpillar killer.

Cool the bigger the pot the better.Everybody seems to love smart pots.It gets hot in the valley so maybe when the heat peaks you could put them in the shade for a bit if its really hot. When you plants start to bud I would definitely get the caterpillar killer.
