I want to learn and switch to hydroponics. So i may ask what seems like stupid questions but i need to know. First what does DWC stand for. and also PPM when it comes to nutes??

Deep Water Culture : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_water_culture

PPM : This is a way of expressing very dilute concentrations of substances. Just as per cent means out of a hundred, so parts per million or ppm means out of a million. Usually describes the concentration of something in water or soil. One ppm is equivalent to 1 milligram of something per liter of water (mg/l) or 1 milligram of something per kilogram soil (mg/kg).

- Hey. I switched to DWC no that long ago. I find it easier than soil, and it's producing potent bud.

What kind of set up are you looking at?

i have a 3 gallon bucket with a lid that has basket moulded in. air pump hose and stones. not sure best way to get seed to where i can put it in the water system, or what to put in water to promote growth

General hydroponics is a good place to start. Send a private message to the hydro mod Hellraizer30, he can help you with nutes and setup. Very helpful mod. Enjoy hydro and watch how much faster it grows that soil.

CFL's, LED's, HID?

There's lots of videos on youtube showing how and what to do....check them out.

You can start your seed in rockwool (flushed and Ph adjusted), when the roots are coming out from the bottom and sides of the rockwool cube (2 or 3 weeks), you take everything and put it into the net pot, fill with Hydroton. You're ready to DWC.

I'm not bashing "General hydroponics", I have no experience with that brand at all.

- So -

I'm using Advanced Nutrients, Ph Perfect, 3 part, It's pretty much idiot proof.

An is a very solid nute line (dont let the others tell you so) I just find that they are overpriced on their additives. I use the sensi series of base nutes with botanicare additives. An tends to be a bit pricey

That last part, "...much faster it grows that soil"

I've heard that and it makes sense....but Im curious to what that equates to?? I mean it doesn't mean that a strain that takes 10 weeks in soil to mature only takes 8 or 9 in hydro, does it? Does it only pertain to the veg cycle, just get bigger plants quicker?

Always wondered about that. Thanks

Flowering time is strain dependent. veg cycle is accelerated. In a traditional old school soil setup, you feed the soil it feeds the plants right? Well in hydro there isnt a time for the medium to feed the roots. In hydro you are feeding them exactly what they need when they need it. Also it is more fragile, soil tends to be more forgiving. A problem in soil can be fixed within a week, whereas a def prob in hydro can be corrected in a day or two (maybe less). My rule of thumb for new growers that is unless you can spend daily time with your plants go soil (check out the subcools old school organics) and check out some of his super soil. Just add water. Hope it helps mate. peace.

I am doing a hempy bucket grow for a trial run, it is easy and plants love the hydro nutes in just 100% perlite, but... DWC is monster for plant size and bud size, not even close.

There is no dumb questions, but there are A LOT of dumb answers make sure you do not take anything here as "gospel". Many mis-informed users giving erroneous information not on purpose but from lack of knowldge or repeated hear-say.

Be safe, grow green, and think out side the box for what works for you.

To start a seed get a tray and a Humidity dome over it. (2 liter bottle cut in half will work for single plant.) Germing them in the paper towel method is a nice way to watch the progress but it is not a necessary step. As long as a seed stays dark moist (not wet/soaked) and warm it will grow (giving decent genetics). Keep the seed covered from light till the leaves emerge but make sure it receives light the second it does so, i use a little piece of rockwool to cover the whole, lightly packed so the leaf will just push it away when its ready. Just plain water on seeds, no nutes. Once they have developed the first set of "real" leaves you can add the nutes in slowly (usually 1/4 of the bottles instructions is a good place to start.) Hope it helps and gl

Great advice in here... aside from waiting until your first "true leaves" come in, also make sure to check that the root system is strong and healthy before adding nutes. I had one plant that was lagging behind and decided to give it nutes anyways and had to end up flushing the plant for a few days to remedy the issue.

Once you get your dome set up for your seedling (if you ever do) make sure to also spray the inside of the dome once a day or so to help keep the humidity up, you should be good with spraying only once a day or so... If your rockwool is glistening due to being waterlogged, stop spraying until the top half of the rockwool is dry. This will help promote early root growth as the plant will literally reach down to get water.

Good luck and happy growing!
