  • "It's all politics in these cups. We know that now. Moonshine can't slip under the radar and win on his home turf. Everyone knows where he was entering through and what his nugs look like. I told him the other night after I heard the results that he'd be a lock to win here in Detroit at this year's cup. But then again, I don't know if I want that tough competition

Recently found a link, thanks to a fellow member, where Danny Danko and HT Cultivation Editor Nico Escondido discuss the judging system for HT Cannabis Cups.
The conversation occurs in episode 13, from 8:30 to about 15:00 and takes place on 1/27/2012.

http://hightimes.com/entertainment/dan/7214

From what i grasped, Nico basically admits that previous events prior to "i guess a year ago" were meaningless and the current system is "an evolving process" with existing flaws with respect to integrity. I feel, regardless of the new technologies, testing processes and promises, its hard to, all of a sudden, trust the results of these events with all the negative reputation earned in the past.

I would still be interested in hearing any recent personal experiences and opinions regarding this topic.

the patient pick thing is somewhat legit.....if you watch american weed i think on nat geo..they had a small part where this girl got a box of small samples (but it was a pretty big box of free weed) and each was labeled only hybrid number x and she had to try em all and rate them by number.....however she claimed she didnt get started for whatever reason until a few days before so i dont feel any type of judging event is accurate because in this case she was sort of power smoking...idk i guess you just have to hope the true best somehow surfaces through the bs

Yeah, I seen that episode. I feel they used her for ratings and to fill some air time. She was kinda ditsy and definitely highlighted some of the current flaws within the system. Who picks these people? I would have been honored to take on that responsibility and commit as much time required to fairly judge each sample, as I am sure some judges do, but this lady was a horrible example of how to properly judge samples.

haha i know she said some stupid shit they shouldnt of aired thats why in my post i tried not to give her any mention as she seems the type that would like it lol she reminds me of my gf so she instantly pissed me off they both think they are super cool and hot shit...and i totally agree idk that it was her fault she made it seem like she knew someone and didnt get the chance until late but still i would have it all set up so each sample was my first smoke of the day lol....ahhh im a pothead

Yeah, I hear you. I think that would be one of the best methods, to test each sample completely sober each morning, but due to the vast number of samples from each category and limited time frame, this process would not be possible. Nevertheless, there are more effective ways to test than consuming numerous samples in a row and trying to rate them accordingly. She was miss high times from a previous year, so i believe it was a huge fail on her behalf and high times for selecting her. Obviously, the selection process of competent judges needs work as well.

"cali is even more fn crooked hahahha.. the cup in the dam is as legit as it gets.. and when i say that i mean the seed company category.. the coffeeshop is all rigged.. imvho... thats why 3rd is first in the coffeeshop. but the seed company cups are about bomb weed...period. he who has the best will get placed...and he who enters in the right category as well."

I remember reading this when posted, and certain points were reinforced from what was inferred from the conversation, that occurs in episode 11 of Free Weed, at around 10:00. http://hightimes.com/entertainment/dan/7214

They provide no comments on the Greenhouse or Barneys strains that won first and second in the coffeeshop aka "who has the most marketing $" category, regarding the quality of those winning samples or their personal opinion on them but are more than happy to share their experience on the samples in the seed categories.

So from what I gathered, if there is any value and integrity in these cups, it would lie within the smaller, more specific categories, however, I find it difficult to trust the worth of any category within these event(s), due to the opinion that at least one category is so blatantly biased and can be purchased by the highest bidder.
