It would't be a flat tax if you had different sales taxes on different items!

Once again, let's punish the rich.
you mean punish the poor.

a flat tax on consumption would do just that.

what percentage of a poor person's income is spent every year? answer: close to 100%.

what percentage of a wealthy person's income is spent every year? answer: not 100%, not even close.

so you have 100% of the poor person's income being taxed at X percent, and Y<100% of the wealthy person's income being taxed at X percent.

wow, you totally fit the narrative of conservatism negatively correlating with cognitive ability. uncanny.

I never said I was for a flat tax on consumption. I was simply pointing out to somebody how foolish it sounds when you say you like a FLAT TAX that VARIES.

my partner lives on investment income, actually.
Lucky her, she gets to be around you all day, too.

$900/month is doable but you have to live in the right area to do it.
I'd rather not live under the freeway overpass.

i made less than the standard deduction last year, you tell me what my IRS bill was.
OK, got it. You were talking about state income tax when you slipped that in there so I mistakingly thought you were referring to that as well. I know some people have a hard time seeing the difference between taxes (state, local, federal, income, excise, sales, capital gains, etc) and I don't want anybody, especially myself, to get confused.

Yet for some reason you cant understand that. If you don't need it to live the the government would tax you on it. For food and essentials they can make it 0% or close to it. The people with extra money after buying non-taxed essentials can then go out and buy tv's ,movies, entertainment, ect.. The people who have extra money can pay for the added tax on luxuries because it is comparable to the money saved on non taxed essentials. This will help people on the poverty line who may now be able to buy another loaf of bread or essential item with the tax savings. In regards to the rest above the poverty line it would still be fair. The further you are from that poverty line the less an extra loaf of bread means anything. Middle class people go out every once in a while & the help with essentials may give them some extra money to pump back into the economy. The rich go out almost constantly they don't need help with the essentials & will hardly notice the savings. The rich go out because they have money to spend so the more higher taxed luxuries "all at the same rate" the more they end up spending on taxes. That is what i meant by different tax levels. At the federal levels and get rid of income tax
