Anwhere between 1 and 36 (4 per sq. ft. in SOG)-- and I'm not joking.
Number of plants has nothing to do with your light, and everything to do with the space, time and equipment you have for the grow. 500g would be near a gram a watt-- too ambitious a goal for the virgin grow imo

Design your canopy spacing-> from there you will be able to determine how many will fit in there, remember that indica dom. plants fatten up and grow upwards around double the size, and sativa dom. plants grow 2-3 times their size during flower. I've seen 1 massive plant in a 4x4 and ive also seen 16 plants in a 4x4. Depends on how many plants you want to care for, how many eggs you'd like in one basket, and each genetic variety comes with its own optimal level of performance.

I did 8 under a 600 and harvested 18 zips dry. Also, vegged for 7 weeks. First Real indoor grow.
it not about how many lmao so what ur saying is i can put 65 plants under a 600 in room A and 8 plants is room B undera 600 and il get the same yeilds as long as the 65 plants are spaced correctly LMFAO w/eva
they say 8 MAX for a 600 any less will make your yeilds bigger so for your sake dont listen to the advice given to put more than 8 in ther u wil be very dissapointed

Stuff as many plants under the light you can. Put them up on something elevated when they are small so they get closer to the light.
If you only have 600W. and are concerned about yield you should jack the smaller plants up within a couple feet of the bulb. Remember
that light drives yield. The more light you can soak up the better. Light power diminishes by the light-squared rule. That means your
plant gets 1/4 as much light energy from 4 feet as it does from 2 feet. Put your hand over top of your plant and leave it there for 10
seconds. If your hand doesn't feel too warm then your plants are OK too.

Read an article by Erik Biksa called GROWING ON THE GRID. Your setup is smaller than what he explains BUT the principals are all applicable. It improved my harvest trumendously.
You need to ask yourself a few questions...
How many plants can you legally grow? If you're not a legal grower grow less than 99 and don't worry because 1 illegal plant is as much trouble as 50 in most places.
How will you be harvesting? Larger plants are a bitch to trim alone because they take forever. Smaller plants can be trimmed up quickly so you dont have a plant sitting around half trimmed waiting for you to get home from work to finish. I can knock out two small plants by myself in an hour. Big plants take me and my buddy 8 hours to finish.
How will you be watering? Are you moving the plants often? Bigger pots are heavier to move BUT you dont need to mave as many. Smaller pots need water more often.
How tall can you get your plants? Smaller pots are quicker because you can grow them shorter an have more of them. Letting a plant get larger takes more time to grow BUT I believe the plants bloom better and are more resistant to problems when they get larger.
450-500g from a 600watt light will be a challenge for a novice grower unless you have DANK genetics and good nutrients and maybe even CO2. I have gotten 565grams from a 600 watt before. I did it like this...
5x5 hydro hut with 600watt HPS. 16, 9"x9" square pots with clones. I vegged until about 24 inches tall. I lollipopped the shit out of em and bloomed for 65 days. I fed top grade nutrients and kept my temps around 74day/68night. It took constant work keeping tiny nuggs from popping up wherr I hacked them off before but it made my colas HUGE.
I have pictures... I could have harvested better but some of my clones were shitty.
