custom soil recipe

My apologies in advance for asking a rather simple question, I recently moved and my only access to the internet is throuh phone for the time being. I will be attempting my hand at a true organic style in the coming months, and hoping to make a mixture I will only have to ro water. I have been using advanced nutrients organic line for 5 years now and would like to just cut the bottled nutes out. I would like advice and comments on whether my soil mix will be to heavy in nutes and what I could or should add or cut back on etc. Thanks in advance. My soil mixture will consist of3 cubic ft fox farm ocean forest soil1.5 cf dr earth natural compost (contains alfalfa, kelp meal, and worm casting)1.5 cf coarse perlite4 cups greensand4 cups dolomite lime2 cup fish bone meal 3-18-02 cup blood meal 13-0-02 cup alfalfa meal 2-1-22 cup kelp meal .6-.5-2.52 cup gypsum2 cup fox farm all purpose 5-5-5.5 to 1 cubic foot? Mushroom compostAnd I'm unsure on the amount for mushhroom compost or the soft rock phosphate, or bat guano. This will be going into 5 gallon smart pots for the clones to root and vegge in for about 4 to 6 weeks at which time I would transplant to 10 gallon pots vegge another 2 weeks and begin flower, when I transfer to the flower (10) gallon pots I would switch to a high p guano instead of high n. I will also innoculate with mycos and let the mixture cook 30 days before use. Does this sound appropriate or perhaps I should change some things? I appreciate all input sorry if I left out anything I will get back to all answers as soon as possible.

Looks pretty good, the more diversity the better in my opinion.. I'd say to half the amount of lime and gypsum though..it just seems a little much compared to what I usually put in. I don't use science or measurements when doing my mixes though, so I am really not sure exactly what I have every time.

Try adding humus too, I just started using it a while ago and boy was i missing out. I like Denali gold, but i havent tried anything else, Denali gold dies have alot of fillers in it though which pisses me off.

I like to throw in some humic acid to get some extra fungi established too. E.B. Stone ultra bloom plant food is great, I like all E.B. Stone amendments and soil.

2-1-22 alfafa meal?? holy smokes. we sub rock phosphate for bat turds. it does seem pretty rich to me on the whole I dunno if I would put clones into that mix with out a buffer of less amazing soil.

Depends on some of your bases on whether or not you can pull RO only. Even then, watch for burn on your up-potting with that mix.

Ideally you want a lower charge for first up and seedlings/clonlings ... like straight OF with a light tea feeding.

Cook times are variable, but typically you want time for the mycos etc to work on integrating your amendments thoroughly. Usually 60-90 days. Basically keep in mind that you are making soil. Mother nature keeps her own schedule.

Humic acids may be needed with the amount you're adding here. In practice, adding in some granular/powdered will avoid the need for more humic base materials. The base soil already has a fair amount and the other composts should as well. Problem is you practically need a lab to analyze your mix after you cook it up to find out how available/utilized some of those sources are.

Much debate on humics/fulvics/etc, but they do help in additional amendments for these mixes IME.


In the long run, you'll want to run tea as well. Straight RO works well for most "super soil" recipes, but not all strains, stress, etc will allow this without some mitigation. Mainly the teas help to ensure you're going to be keeping the soil happy like it would in nature. Keep the soil life happy and you'll be fine in other words. Teas feed the soil as the plant mucks up the balance and depletes things.

I may have forgotten to add that I will be using microbe teas I have made teas with my aact system many times previous and will contrinue. The alfalfa is a 2-1-2 ratio since I was on my phone the npk numbers and quantity numbers got mixed up haha sorry. I was not really planning on using this for clones only established plants for clones I always just do a mix of ffof and roots organic greenfield for the extra n at a 50/50 ratio. As for humics go I have powdered humic with mycos in it as well. Thanks for the replys. Also why do you replace the rock phosphate with the guano any certain reason? I always thought the rock phos wasn't only a nutrient supplement but a place for the bacterias and things to latch on and grow.

I usually git soft rock phosphate 0-20-0 at $8.50 a pound, its a great source of iron and calcium and I grind it in my pestle to more evenly spread it through the soil. I had a friend become sick while using a bat guano so I try to stay clear of it because i have a weakened immune system as well. ... Will not burn if over applied.. I like using fossilized seabird guano in the soil 12-12-2 and the teas git a healthy dose of worm poopins. I've had the same bag of unopened bat guano for over 2yrs now because its just not for me.

Good looking out on the guano sickness, I opened a bag up a few days ago and accidentlyt got a large whif have been sick with a real bad lung infection since then, and was wondering if it may not have been the cause. Also very good to know about the no burn considering guanos must be scarcely applied. Just the types of info I was looking for

I just keep it simple! Buy earth juice sea blast dry nutes and buy fox farm soil. Buy perlite epson salt kelp and alafameal and your done. Just brew when needed. Ej molasses is the best and cheapest for its price! $10 gal, botanicare humic adcid is the cheapest at $15 gal. Ej has fossilized sea bird guano, sea weed, bone meal, and micro. Only cones is that it doesnt contain and cal mag.
