Ok so I was watching on the science channel called the "science of sex" and they explained why people enjoy sex, etc, from a scientific standpoint.
But we all know why people enjoy kissing, as we have experienced it, but whats the science behind why we enjoy it?

this is simple.. it's because the mouth is loaded with nerves, therefore kissing arouses these nerves and therefore feels good..

That's your answer right there. It's bond-building. Watch the mating ritual of several species of birds, such as the albatross. These birds mate for life and have complex rituals which include beak-to-beak contact. They only do it with their mates, which suggests that kissing will cause increased production of oxytocin.

These things are probably partly learned behaviours which are then incorporated into a species' genetics because mating rates are increased for individuals who's genetics allow them to properly express this trait (it make them desirable). The successfulness of conformity to acceptable behaviours as a survival strategy is what eventually drives genetically programmed behaviour through (natural) selective breeding.

Of course conciousness means that humans tend to make things much more complicated...I do believe that apes kiss too though, to strengthen bonds, so kissing is certainly pre-homosapiens.
