Russet Mites

On russet mites, Avid doesn't work?? Im talking about spider mites that I have encountered. I guess I should be thankful they died from the Avid, and that I haven't had a mite in years. Hey Pain---can go into more detail about differences between russet and a normal spider mite??

Great info mipainpatient. You observations are spot on with mine. These russet mites are garden killers for sure and restarting is the best way to get rid of them. Russet mites are SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than spider mites and they also don't make webs on the edges of the serrated leaves.

Gross!!! I got the shivers!! Aren't those from California?? :hump: That really sucks. I don't think I'll be taking clones from anyone for a while...

I like the total clean out and bleach down for a situation like this. Kill everything in the house!!! All my house plants were destroyed before I moved here and every plant has been grown from seed, only because I bought a little houseplant from home depot and the fuck had mites on it which spread to other house plants..Total isolation is the only protection!!!

Yea so spider mites (two spotted and red) are crawly, web-making little buggers that, like russet mites, experience an accelerated life cycle with higher temps (above 78 things get faster and faster, probably peaking around 95). They look like little mini ticks (but with white/brown bodies) and their eggs are easy to see, and the baby spider mites look like little teeny tiny white versions of the adults, but move a bit differently. HEck heres some pictures:

Spider mite damage (early) on a plant looks actually a lot like the brown (egg) spots I outlined one can ID in Russet mite infestation stage 1, but the spider mite damage will almost always show like this:
View attachment 2205183
not brown but yellow peppered spots all over the leaves which they are feeding on. For the russets you will only see such a small amount of damage if you have a very small population of babies. Otherwise there are so many of them that there will be rusting EVERYWHERE (older leaves, as the rusting generally shows more as the fed-upon leaf grows. Also in this stage, it is not adequate to look at these rusted leaves to confirm/disconfirm RM presence, as they have long since migrated to more bountiful parts of the plant. Also as mentioned and clearly visible in the OPs pictures on the first page of this here thread, russet mites are quite a bit smaller, I'd say the adults are a tiny bit longer than spider mite babies but about half as thick, don't quote me on it. There are some interesting anatomical drawings of russet mites from papers from the 70's if you sift through the google results for 'hemp russet mite' or 'aculops cannabicola' you should come up with them. Here is a pretty grisly picture of a close up of a terminal phase plant:

From my experience this is about a 30-50x picture and you are mostly looking at babies here. I find the adults are more orange/brown colored and like I have said, they migrate to new growth/windy tops pretty readily when the population levels get this high. Also I assure you the plant that has em this bad is dying quickly
I mentioned the orange/bronze color you see when they overtake the new growths or an injury location, I found a picture that looks similar to this(but zoomed in enough you can make out the mites):
(RIU wouldn't let me post it probably because of how it is stored at ICmag, just click the link)

THats all for now, peace (more pics added in edit, yo welcome!)

Actually I think we're talking more like Serbia/Hungary/other countries near those. Check out this "must read":

I also recently found this from our brothas&sistas in Montana, i'm pretty sure this is the same group who you will turn up a video of talking about their infestation in front of a bunch of state politicians if you enter "hemp russet mite" on youtube and pick the video that isn't the OP's upload. This is from a community publication, should be able to enter "russet mite" in a page/file search and jump right to the article:

(think they show some of the same pics I uploaded earlier and in the pdf above, but shows you that this pest deserves to be taken seriously)

This is why I try to grow all of my fruits/vegetables from seed too...houseplants are a little different story, I just avoid all together, been burned by shitty houseplants from HD waaaay too many times

Forgot to mention:
As I said they secrete PGRs as they feed. The few plants I've seen 5+ weeks in flower when these guys show up (even over a foot down from the tops, having probably laid eggs in week 1 or 2) the tops suddenly hermie at week 6 and that is when I noticed there had been some stem elongation that past week too (totally not normal for the cultivar) which is almost ALWAYS present if for example they are infesting one branch but not another, it will be elongating much much faster. After putting the hermie/elongation together I was able to find their exact node regions based on the elongation points. Not that it helps but just another part of the lore I guess, if you get freak stretch and hermie'ing this could be a cause.

I made the horrible mistake of entering my room...after I was outside for awhile. Ouch. Won't be doing that again. Tearing down, hot water w/ bleach and then followup on all surfaces with our steamer. 212 degrees f is tougher than any bug I have ever seen. :)

My room needed a good cleaning but not the way I wanted things to go down, that's for sure! :(

I don't imagine my peel n stick floor tiles would hold up terribly well, but does anyone have a steamer i can borrow? I need it tomorrow if available, in the middle of my own clean up at the moment.....

What they told us at Oaksterdam was to use sulfur. I used it and it worked wonders! I used a spray for the open air plants and a burner for the ones tented. what do you mean by a steamer? carpet shampoo? Curious if pyrethrum would work. anyone know?
