LED light for 4x4 Grow Tent

I'm currently running a 600w HPS light but want to add another tent with a more energy efficient setup. Is there a light setup anyone would suggest for the area stated and would it be possible to spend under $400 for an LED setup comparable with a 600w HPS as far as light penetration is concerned. Sorry dude.... not gonna happen. $400 might get you a 150-250W HPS replacement.... for a good 600W replacement light, you're going to be looking at $1000 ballpark...

Hey Troutfly,
you are going to be disapointed with any $400 LED. If you can drop $1500 you will be super happy with a Black Dog. I know its a lot but if you figure $129 for a bulb every 6 months and the need for a can fan and ducting and all that mess it is a good deal. I will never go back to HPS, and keep replacing old HPS gear with new LEDs

I found a company that a local grower uses and has been completely satisfied. They are called ProSourceWorldwide and I think I am looking at getting a few of their 90w UFO lights... I realize now the cost is going to be greater but will pay for itself in a few years...

So troutfly, why don't you go with the LEDs for vegging and then add a 250 watt+ HPS or CMH for flowering? If you can handle the heat from the lights, and if you're running a 600 HPS I would think you can, the results should be awesome. Not enough people run this combo IMHO.

I was told by the company representative that it is not good to mix the lights due to the different environment requirements. My thoughts were the same as yours, but I just think he wanted to sell me more lights! The whole reason I'm looking into LED is I think 1500 watts from a single bedroom apartment is a little too much. It is a legal medical grow though...

Yeah I would be a little dubious about that claim of mixing lights. There are other growers that do it on here, and while I don't know the specifics of ProSource's LEDs, I find it hard to believe that they're that different from most LED grow-lights. Then again I don't know it all about LEDs that's for sure.

So are you vegging in one tent and flowering in another? I ask because replacing a 600 HPS in flowering is pricey like BeefB said and a ProSource 90 UFO is a 90x1 watter, which is roughly about 45 watts in LED output. You could veg with them, but 1 watters are not very good at flowering or at least they don't seem to have any fans around here when it comes to flowering. Having said all that I've never owned a ProSource so take my opinion with that in mind but a 90x1 for US $250.00 to $300.00 seems steep.

I mix all my led units with no problem. In one tent I have hps running with a 2 led lights. You can mix led lights in your tent have no fear.

I learned to mix cool white cfls with UFO 90 that only has ~ 2% blue during veg: during flower I add more warm whites + some reptile bulbs for uv + IR


That said, 1500 watts is a lot of light unless your grow space is ~ 10 x 10. That's also a lot of heat to remove from a tent

so back to the original question kinda : what LED setup replaces a 600w HPS for flowering. I take off the $400 limit, but i want to know what it takes to replace HPS with LED on a serious scale.

Start with roughly 400w (actual watts) and see how close you can get to matching a 600w hps. Some people can do it with less watts but some people have needed 600w led to match 600w hps...depends on the grower more than the lights.

I have two flowering areas and a veg cabinet. I think I'm going to keep the HPS in one and LED in the other to compare the results. The rep from the manufacturer told me that the LED's produce little to no heat but the environment in the tent needed to be around 85 degrees for optimal budding. Seems a little high to me. So we shall see it will be a fun and interesting experiment... I probably should start a grow journal but I'm one of those paranoid types!

Hey troutfly,
1500 watts is not unusual. A big screen TV with a good stereo will use that. A computer use at least 600 watts and the monitior 200 or more. My old roommate had 3 PC with 2 monitors on all the time.

Yes you can veg under a flower spectrum LED, growth is great.

A Black Dog BD700 at 1500 will do it. You will save cash and hassle. If you go to there website you can listen to some independent reviews. You can veg and flower under the one light. I am really happy with my XL

Current shopper for LED's. This becomes confusing and easily get lost in the search. Recently the price of some makers of LED's have dropped in price, Then trying to decide on one of these to save money, thinking it over I begin to read up on the more expensive for LED's. These are much better no doubt. The big challenge I run into how little area their core coverage. This doubles the price either by having to get two 450w or one 700w
