Yes because when you summarize anything, the person is better informed then reading the information him/herself firsthand? Is this the point your trying to make? The thing is, I know your not lazy your just fishing for ammunition again the poster. If he doesn't give you what you look for, your not satisfied. actually, summaries can enhance the reader's understanding.

for example, if i were to summarize the great gatsby, i would make sure to note the theme of time that reoccurs through the novel. "jumping over sundials", "in the meantime, in between time", the chapter that is merely a timeline of events during the summer, gatsby knocking over the clock when he sees daisy again (and others i'm sure i've missed).

i would also point out that nick carroway has a gay encounter in the elevator while drunk at the end of one chapter. most people would miss that, especially if you're a righty douche like the copy and pasters here.

First of all calling the OP a righty douche is uncalled for, double standard racism is an issue it has gotten out of hand and all it does is cause more racism. I am sure you will try to refute that but anyone with a little logic knows its an elephant in the room. I read a lot, some books are good others bad but regardless I find I only summarize to a person that isnt going to take the time to read it himself anyway or was too lazy. If summarizing is such a good idea as you say, why don't they do that at the beginning of each chapter in curriculum? I am sure our students can pass a test on a summarization of a chapter.

So I assume liking a book is "incapable of original thought"? Liking someone's music is "incapable of original thought"? How many people do you know, when you compliment a song say "really sing it to me"?
