Part of the answer to your question is in your post. P19 was a California proposition. There is no similar proposition on the 2012 ballot. FDD was not opposed on the merits, he was opposed because he (mistakenly) thought the existing regime in California allowed him to operate safely while raking in all of those delicious black marker profits. I would guess his opinion of Ron Paul's position on the drug war might be different today.

Two weeks ago, after nearly a year of writing Throwback of the House, I finally got the nerve to feed my friends one of my creations.

Three days later, I got a call from my editor, informing me that it's time to end this madness.

I'm pretty sure this isn't a coincidence.

​In bidding farewell to Throwback, I've brought forth one of the first recipes I found. A dish so bizarre that it must be reserved for a special occasion such as this. A dish so potentially vile that it would make me never, ever want to experiment with old cookbooks again.

I present to you, from 1953's 500 Tasty Snacks: Ideas of Entertaining, Aspic Entrées: Jellied Bouillon with Frankfurters.

​Dissolve unflavored gelatin in hot beef broth. In a pretty gelatin mold, place diced celery, slices of hard-boiled eggs and hot dogs in an eye-pleasing design. Pour beef Jell-O into the mold. Chill until firm.

​I usually do my experiments after my five-year-old daughter has gone to sleep, but due to gelatin's long chill time, she caught a glimpse of it in the fridge and asked her dad what it was. After he described the recipe and explained that, yes, people used to eat such things, she wrinkled her brow, cocked her head and said, "That's got to be a joke."

Before our final serving, she protested by stealing my dry erase board and writing "NO! NO! NO!" all over it.

She's a smart kid. Traumatized, but smart.

​As for the taste? Jesus Christ, it's processed meat in Jell-O, with a little crunch from the celery and some extra slime provided by boiled egg white. What the hell do you think it tasted like? I managed one chew before the whole mess rocketed out of my mouth into the sink.

Four hours later, when I was going to bed, my mouth rinsed with water and Everclear, I had a flavor flashback and started gagging.

I think that means it's time to go.

Tuna Twinkie Soufflé

1 Tbl rendered chicken fat, divided
12 Hostess Twinkies
Salt
White Pepper
1/2 tsp dry mustard
4 eggs, separated
2 cans tuna in oil, drained, reserve oil.

Preheat oven to 350 F.
Grease a 7-inch soufflé dish with 1 tsp of chicken fat and 1 tsp tuna oil.

Slice Twinkies in half lengthwise. Remove and reserve cream filling.

In a large food processor, combine Twinkie cakes, half of the Twinkie filling, and the remaining chicken fat and tuna oil.

Blend until the mixture has reached the consistency of a thin batter.

Transfer ingredients to a medium saucepan and cook over low heat. Stir in salt, white pepper, and mustard. Remove from heat.

Beat in egg yolks, one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition. Fold in tuna. In a medium bowl, beat egg whites until stiff but not dry. Fold beaten egg whites into tuna mixture. Pour into greased soufflé dish.

Bake in 350 oven 40 to 45 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown. Top with remaining Twinkie cream.

Serve with a tossed salad.
