Dude, you sound like your in the same boat I was when I first was curious. I have a thread started that's basically documenting my first grow, issues, space, lights, shit like that. Check it out. But do MORE research than that. I have spent probably 3 hours a day on this site for the last 2 weeks just reading. Learning. But growing is turning into it's own learning curve.

No. Look into getting many CFL's. but they need to be on the 6500k Temp spectrum. that is the "veg" temp for your plants.

Yes, lights will absolutely make a difference, your temp will go up, that's why you get fans. CFL's are very cool though, I have mine on 24/7 and can still grab them with my hands. They provide heat, but it's minimal.

that i can say it isnt, i use white flat paint on my closet walls. if you need some help on a light, just get a 400w dimmable so u can put metal halide or hps in there. i got a magnetic ballast so i use metal halide conversion

That's my thread. I'm currently still working through it. But it'll help you with my set up since it sounds like your looking for something similar. I also have a massive warehouse full of grow equipment in the Twin Cities that I love to shop at. You want a beginners course with your space, I'd search CFL Indoor Grow, one reason being in a closet, CFL's produce little heat. Much of my set up came from a thrift store. FoxFarm is who I get my nutes and my soil from. Oceanic i've heard is good, I'm currently using their all purpose soil which is great. but I've literally spent maybe $100 on my set up.

If your friend thinks a heating lamp is LIGHTS then yes. Lol. but seriously, NO!! your lights will provide heat, your plants will provide heat, your body in the summer time will provide heat in a closeted space.
