hello, I have a digital ballast that is dimable from 600watts, 450watts, and 300 watts. my question is can I use a 400 watt Hps bulb, hooked to my ballest dimed to 450 watts???? or will that extra 50 watts blow my bulb. thank you.

My ballast has the exact same watt selections and when I asked the maker (virtual sun hydroponics) they advised me to always run a 600w bulb with it. Not saying a 400w will or will not work but id hate to hear about a fire or something.

I would not do it.Glass shards will knock off trichomes.I think with a Lumetek digi you can (by design),but not with Quantums and there clones.

with my 600w dim ballast from gavita i can go with 400w bulbs BUT my dim settings are 300w/400w/600w/660w. for using the 660w setting you are recommended to use a high quality HID bulb (they recommoned certain brands..dont remmeber who)
Anyways, i know i can use a 400w HID because the makers have it writen in the manual. so i advice you to contact the makers but unless they say it can be done dont try it! HID lights have about 5-10 atmopheres pressure in them... would not be a good day :P.

i recommend you getting a 600w buld and dim that insted.. when i think about it, why even bother with the 400w??
best regards

You describe an overdrive option.Like a "Super Lumens" option on some Lumateks.Shortens the life of a regular bulb.

Gavitas 660w option is not overdrive or super lummens its acctual extra watt. or at least so they say + they won award for best digital ballast so i think ill trust them :). but you are correct, it shortens life on bulb. Best regards

Found some literature on the gavita.OP google your brand and specs of ballast for info.
Coupled with the internal microprocessor, the DigiStar ballasts ensure the highest possible light output from your chosen 600W lamp. Please note - to produce the optimal spectral output your lamp can deliver we recommend you use a 400W lamp at the 300W and 400W setting, and a 600W lamp at the 600W and 660W setting. When using Metal Halide lamps, do not dim or boost; use a 400W lamp at the 400W setting, and a 600W lamp at the 600W setting.

cool it sais the same thing in my manual. the only thing not mentioned (probably my memory tho lul) was the part about swapping to 400w bulbs for 300/400w setting. thx a lot for pointing it out as i was not swapping bulbs! you saved me having to buy new bulbs faster :). this is the clip i saw where they state they dont do superlummens http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPn4Lci9H9o.

Anyway medi420 check with the makers of your ballast first but i dont recommend it.

Watching the vid I see they do have an overdrive setting.Superlumens is a trademark of Lumatek I beleive.Gavita can just call it hyperdrive if they wanted too.I personaly would not use this feature and would prefer a remote ballast aswell...my preference.

You will overdrive the 400 by 50 watts, and give it a shorter service life. The ballast is what I would be worried about. If I did it it would be at 300 only.
