4x4, and how many you can fit depends on amount of veg time,4 weeks veg should just about fit 9 plants, but you also have to factor in pot size too.
do you wanna veg for a long time or for a short time?so it can be 1 big plant,or loads of small ones.
but in the past i have grown 9 in that space after a 5 week veg.they were all topped, they were in 11 litre pots in 3 rows of 3.they took up every inch of space, but it looked great seeing the canopy of colas.

space is everything to me, i would go with 5x5. a 4x4 space is ideal for a 600w light but if you use reflective coatings on the walls you will yield a hell of a lot more from the 5x5 plus you will have less chance of heat build up, mildew and rot etc.

you may also need extra space inside your box for other equipment (i.e. dehumidifier, a/c, fans, etc...) or to move the plants around.

I do 6x4 and have up to 16 at a time. I prefer 9-12 and keep in mind, they are of varying stages of growth. I put in up to two a week for flowering and harvest up to two a week. They are usually 8 weeks when I put them in. I have a separate vegging area using ten t-5 bulbs. I top my plants and clone the tops so it's like a big conveyor belt.
