seeds cracked into red cups. help..

ok i did the paper towel germ method. my seeds have cracked, and im going to put into soil. should i wait to put them under my lights (400 watt mh) or keep them in the dark until they sprout above the soil? or maybe another method is best?? thanks

how deep should i plant them? i was gonna go with about an 1/4 inch

you can grow your seeds under your 400w without an issue. Get the light cycle on now so that within a handful of hours of the seedlings breaking through the dirt they'll get their light, you don't want them to start stretching.

What's the advantage of indirect lighting for seedlings? Is that HPS/MH only?

they can get bleached and stressed when hit with too much direct light. but you'd have to be hard pressed to make that happen. just keep the 400w about 30" from them and they should be fine. as soon as the coytoledons emerge from the soil, photosynthesis starts so as much light as possible. the more light, oygen and water the plant can have the better the growth.

so i watered the solo cups until they drained out of the bottom before i planted the seeds. whats a ideal watering regiment?

There is no watering regiment. You water them when they need watering. This is probably the bigger learning curves for people starting out growing but you will get the hang of it fairly rapidly. If you just use a watering regiment you run the risk of over or underwatering, both of which are not good things for plants let alone seedlings.

ok thanks. let me ask you this. i dont wanna dry out my seeds, or drown them. just keep the soil moist? or let it get nice and dry first? they still have not sprouted above soil, but they had tails from germ before i put them in.

If you watered until run off (drained out the bottom of cup) your good for atleast 3-4 days prob even longer unless your rooms extremely hot and dry. Just stick ur finger and see if the top few inches is still moist. Of pick up a cheap moisture meter there like 10 bucks or less. The meter helped me alot my first few grows

Id also suggest syran wrap over the top of the cup until it pokes. To help keep the humidity high

I would strongly advise against getting one of these moisture meters, they're not too accurate unless you splash out on a really good one, for seedlings as suggested above, i'd just poke your finger into the soil and just water very gently, and then once it has established itself you can simply water till there is runoff and just learn the difference between the weight of a wet and a dry pot . When watering plants as opposed to seedlings you will be given nothing in terms of advice but learning the weight of the pot. Again, a bit vague and hard to tell at first, but you rapidly learn and you'll wonder why it was such a hard thing to do

i also put the saran wrap over them. i put them in as soon as they cracked. there was not much of a tail. im about 28 inches over top with the 400 watt mh. hope it all works out.
