But Im sure that keeping those yellow leaves added like a pound of buddage....Jeez
I have a fem seed of that strain right now, I was saving that one till I get a tent so that I can clone that one and keep that strain in my garden.

It's a long grow. 4 months vedge and about 3 months flower.. But man it's worth it!!! And oh, 1 plant for a 2x4 tent because it's huge!!! And yes, you have to trim this strain a lot.... I am trying to shorten this plant with some auto flowers crossbreeding and it's going ok...

It's going to take me longer then that because I plan on keeping a mother and clones of that strain.

I only take leaves once they are yellowed and weak to attack from bugs and mold. The plant can move most nutrients about the plant, and its stored in the leaves and roots. When the calyxes are sucking massive amounts of nutrients the fan leaves act like food stores.

Even Jorge Cervantes will tell you to trim leaves, IF your canopy is too thick (I would say he is more experienced than most on RIU.) Obviously fan leaves absorb light, to photosynthesize- but they also block light from anything in their shadow (as do all physical materials.) The fan leaves only die during flower because the plant is using the energy stored in them, ONLY because when you are flowering (if you know what you're doing), you are giving the plant less nitrogen and more phosphorous and potassium... this is the best way to feed for the biggest/best flower production, so DON'T add any nitrogen (of course.) Point being- they aren't shedding their leafs because they don't need them anymore. It's true that photosynthesis occurs in the leaves but it also occurs in the buds themselves (as well as the rest of the plant other than roots.) That, my friends, is the only reason cannabis appears green in the first place... beneath the green color of chlorophyll, ALL cannabis plants are violet in color. What I'm getting at is fan leaf trimming is a technique used by seasoned professional growers, but only when it's absolutely necessary.
If you remove all leafs, you will see bud production slow to a halt. If you experiment and strategically remove SOME fan leafs you will see advantages & disadvantages to both sides, then you will learn when/WHERE to do it... and when to refrain. Because it CAN be beneficial, but it can hurt you as well.

P.s.- if a fan leaf is yellowing, IMO, it's best to let it fall off on it's own as the plant is currently feeding off of it if it is already yellowed.

2 wet buds totaling 82g,with shit loads of main cola branch on it too, does not equal 40g of dried bud!.I don't care if you are a hobbiest or not,you were boasting your skills to the other guy,so at least back it up with more accurate figures!.Wow I wish I could find a way for my buds to keep 50% of their wet weight, you must teach me how to do this!.
Then maybe I could have 5 oz colas!.057.jpg
And to put this pic into perspective,im 6ft tall and just shy of 20st,don't want you thinking im a midget bigging up a 5 gram bud lmao.

Why do people say not to add nitrogen during flowering? Yes,mthe plants does not need near as much as during veg, but they still need it. And it won't fuck up flowering, thats light dependent. Some yellowing leaves late in flower are as nature intended, but cutting nitrogen males them yellow before their time, which means less bud fuel.

The healthier you keep the plant all the way through harvest, the better yield and quality

Only good reason to trim leaves or branches is in the undergrowth. Helps air circulate and keeps the dense, shady areas from getting mold or fungus. And the plant has more energy for the upper bud growth.

All the leaves are yellow due to being flushed,in fact I wouldn't be suprised if that was the final pic before chop time.I don't think these are the kind of yellowing leaves people are talking about on here.

I am on the side of keeping fan leaves on. Some of the light passes through the leaves even if you can't see it. I really don't understand why people are over thinking it so much, leave the damn plant to do its thing!

Don't cut them unless they're wilting, or dried up. The plant needs to collect as much "sunshine" as possible.
KEEP THE LEAVES!!!!! I personally mesh them into a pan with canola oil and grinded weed to create thc oil. The rest goes into my steam generator... & trust me, It smells lovely.

you'll get various info on this subject. fan leaves are sugar factories. lose a fan leaf during veg and it does damage. lose it near harvest and you do lesser damage. the yellowing/ripening during the last weeks is a normal process whereby the fans give up thier sugars. i personally don't touch my fans except if one is broken or diseased. they cost the plant a lot to manufacture. and they get mad at me if i cut em off. near the end however as i said, you do little harm although idk why you would want to remove them till trim time comes. then they go first. if you wanna do a side by side do one and post your results. then you can enlighten us all.

obijohn:

Because there's plenty of nitrogen stored in the leaves for them to finish flowering. You should not be worried about the health of the over all plant but focus on the growth/production of flowers. I do understand your logic though, but sometimes what's best for the plant isn't best for the buds/harvest. But I agree at the same time, contradictory, yes, I just think that people should find a good spot in between... but completely cutting the plant off from nitrogen supply is just silly. Most nutrient brands have a little nitrogen even in their flowering/bloom phase of plant food.

...forgot to rpely with quote, sorry about that. this is in reply to a post by obijohn on page 9.

"DNA Genetics LA Confidential is 3 Times Cup Winner!!!! It's cannabis seeds are great for medicinal use as they relieve pain and help insomnia. For the everyday user, the high of this herb is psychedelic and energetic, with a hammer. The LA Confidential is a heavy eater. There are two real phenotypes of the Confidential and they will both finish in 55-60 days. One is a bit more hardy, but both equal in knock down drag out stone. Preveging is advised to maximise the yield. Thinning the large fan leaves in the later part of the flower cycle will promote more light getting to the lower buds, thus increasing your yield. With an incredible smell and unique flavour, DNA Genetics LA Confidential is one of our most prized plants and delivers one of the highest highs"

Appearantly DNA genetics also thinks that trimming some leafs may be beneficial, this is their description for L.A. Confidential.
