Does inspiration come from those that are 'better' than you?

How do you get inspired? WHY are you inspired? What leads you to do things to better yourself and why do they do that? What about whatever inspires you to do better is it that is the driving force behind what wants to make yourself a better person?

What is inspiration, what does it mean?

I've always wondered different things I guess.. Ever since I was a kid I've liked to ask people questions that they're rarely ever asked, I've always thought the mundane 'oh, how are you today? Are you having a good day? etc..." type questions were as fake as anything, nobody cares about the real answers to those questions. One day I just decided I'm going to start asking people the weirdest shit I can think of and act like it's totally normal, just to hear their answers, and I guess it stuck. Eventually I just forgot about caring about any criticisms and just focused on the real answers.

It's seemingly been detrimental to my personality, though... Most people I meet can't understand why I'd ask the questions I ask, or why I would think normal people wouldn't/shouldn't be offended by some of them (actually got questioned about that earlier today by my own family..).. In my mind, nothing is 'off limits'. If you're a member of our society, you shouldn't have a problem answering a question or two about it, I mean, if you work it, what's wrong with talking about it?

Personally I've always wanted to decimate the competition. So in a large way my inspiration to become better at whatever the medium is comes from those who are better than me. There is so much that I could say right now on this subject that I'm sure it wouldn't come out as coherent in text as it is in my brain, so I won't go too in depth. Part of me wants to be better than everyone else in the world, and another part just wants to be better than I currently am, but if I really ask myself, I want to be better than I currently am because others are better than me. Just human nature I guess. People who are better than you get the stuff you want, and in all reality, that is unacceptable.

I get inspired to do things because I have alot of hobbies and interests like writing and drawing, dance, gym, skating, musical instruments etc. There's creative inspiration, which may have nothing to do with competition or being 'better' that is often followed by a 'nagging' feeling if you don't actually realize your vision, some people simply see the potential in themselves and think it a waste not to try something, there's inspiration which is really more motivation that can just be all about crushing the competition. Alternatively, if there is a living example of someone else having achieved great things, jealous or not it gives you the go ahead that your goals and expectations are actually realistic. One can also feel inspired to do something (again, leaning towards motivation) when they see there is a market open, a problem, a need that requires addressing... and that is where Design as opposed to fine art comes in.

Would be more detailed but its 3 am and I didn't eat enough today.

Oh shit and I forgot, another motivator is simply taking pleasure in what you do rather than being fixated on the outcome. Sometimes I am bored and watch a blank screen in TextEdit and just try and MAKE inspiration happen because I know I like writing once I get started.

i read once artists paint not because they can but because they have to. i feel the same with plants. i grow because it's in my blood, under my finger nails and hair. if i'm not dirty i'm not happy. i read a statistic where most ppl eat about 50 lbs of dirt in their lifetime. i think i've eatten twice that already.

As (an unpublished or failed) writer, i have found inspiration to come from utterly random sources. I do not think for a second that it is confined or even concentrated in those "better" that we are. I have gathered inspiring gems from the unlikeliest people or situations. cn

I have learned to shed my competitive nature and find what really inspires me. And in most cases, it cannot be defined by vocabulary. It's more or less defined by feeling, or emotion, or an emptiness that my soul knows. It amazes me when something randomly inspires me, because I use many outlets to express it. Sometimes it's people or situations or events. But usually it's something on a whole different level. I can't explain it. Some things will motivate me, but some things will inspire me. It's hard for me to explain. I just know when it happens.

Growing up not having too many role modles it's hard to get inspired sometimes for me. I like to think about all the people who have come before me and i think about how much better i have it than all of them. Even today, in different parts of the world it's pretty messed up, but coming from the states i've grown up to realize how good i have it.

I think true inspiration is a by-product of the minds natural ability to percieve, interpret and interact with its environment. Therefore the inspiration would be as unique as the individual

When u have nothing u appreciate everything
When I had so much more than today, I appreciated the bejeezus out of it. I made a point of consciously savoring the fact that i was prospering. When that stopped, it left me with a good perspective ... not a bitter one. cn

Very true my "Pretty women" style Cali vacation was fucking awesome, I truly felt like an empress ;)
I guess such events do offer inspiration , because i've traveled a few kms down my life path this year. 30 time to do something with myself. I guess my own expriences inspire me, people shape them into what they become.

My motivation comes from needing to survive.. Get a job.. Buy food.. Live.

Honestly, most of my inspiration comes from me trying to better myself. But how do you know if you should better yourself if you don't compare yourself to others? Obviously I see others do something and I want to do it and sometimes I want to do it better. We're a competetive species.

Monkey see monkey do.

My motivation come from happiness. When I see someone sleeping under the bus stop, that makes me work so damn hard so I never have to resort to that. In other words, fear inspires me

Even Asimov had many manuscripts that were refused and went unpublished...
