8mm mauser is a stinker. if the recoil with factory ammo is significant, slug your bore. some 8mm mausers are 8mm grove diameter, and some are 8mm bore diameter. if youre not sure which and your gun is thumping harder than it ought you prolly have a J bore (groove diameter) making extreme pressures when it tries to force a bullet thats .01" too big for the barrel down that long ass tube.I've got a couple 8mm mausers from various countries, and the bayonets. I have a Chinese gew 98 mauser bayonet that is really long like a sword and a couple for my berthier that have some length. I have a lot of c&r guns. Some of them are real POS's, but even with me being an average shot with a factory load I would be hard pressed to miss a pie plate at any distance with any of them. I reload, but not for accuracy. I reload because 8mm mauser, .303 brit, lebel, and 30-40 krag are fucking insanely expensive. That, and sometimes I get tired of shooting surplus ammo that rips my arm out of socket or doesn't go bang every round. I reload surplus into commercial cases a lot.
8mm recoil is pretty harsh all the time in my opinion. I don't buy American made rounds for my rifles because a lot of time they are undersized due to concerns of people who don't know what kind of gun they have shooting the wrong bullet. When I buy ammo for it, it is always surplus or S&B. The S&B is really close to original loadings and have quite a kick. I reload the S&B cases with the surplus bullet and powder but reduce the load 10%. The primers on the surplus 8mm I have cases of are pretty hard and corrosive to boot. Shooting them out of my near mint Gew 98 makes me feel sick to my stomach without reloading them. The k98s and Gew 98s do not fire the .318 round. I know the difference between S and J ammo/guns. The only time you would find yourself with the other round would be if you picked up a 88 commission or something. The chance of someone buying or selling one of these accidentally is pretty remote. I did see an auction house sell a Chinese Type 56(m44 clone) in a 2x4 stock that someone had made as a Carcano carbine though, so it happens. I wish someone would accidentally sell me a 88 commission.8mm mauser is a stinker. if the recoil with factory ammo is significant, slug your bore. some 8mm mausers are 8mm grove diameter, and some are 8mm bore diameter. if youre not sure which and your gun is thumping harder than it ought you prolly have a J bore (groove diameter) making extreme pressures when it tries to force a bullet thats .01" too big for the barrel down that long ass tube.
careful with the lebels too, some of those are designed to shoot steel jacketed wood bullets (no shit, a piece of wood in a steel wrapper) so you get wild pressure from a lead slug.
if your 30-40 krag is a krag jorgensen, dont shoot it. is worth a packet even if it is rusty. factory ammo can crack the chamber and receiver. those are for black powder loads at 40 grains of black powder, smokeless powder is 3-4x more pressure per grain. factory ammo will break the receiver mounted magazine wide open.
.303 brits also come in a wide range of bore diameters, mine is .311 which is nominal, but some are as tight as .306 or as sloppy as .318 slug that bore too. surplus ammo is garbage, some of it is mislabeled AP, some of it is chordite crap from ww1 reboxed by unscrupulous merchants in ww2, and some of it is loaded with mislabeled incendiary (especially in .303 which was the most popular medium machinegun round for all commonwealth forces and even the japanese) incendiaries will fuck your bore up, chordite will rot it out, and AP will grind it smooth making your shit into a shotgun.
If you want some examples look at mil spec ar15 vs commercial parts, the commercial parts are always higher quality(thicker/more durable)...the miltary takes things like cost, weight, harsh conditions into their selection were jim-joe-bob just wants BFGs and to prep for Armageddon. You must live in a state with strict gun control laws or something, I don't understand how you think civilians can't get better weapons than the military as far as infantry, you can just order 50 cal rifles, assault rifes, incendiary ammo and shit right off the internet.lol where are you seriously getting this all from? you think cause militiary weapons cost more that means there not better? heres little insight.. they just get charged more! cause its for the military and government meaning theyll spend more! if you take same piece of equipment that was 500 for the military usually pays 1500 for same piece equipment.. why? because they pay alot more for same thing... While there are alot of great civilian made guns i highly dought they can go up against alot militarys weapons.. ive used alot them. and not saying there just better cause only automatic. and i qaurantee you the armor they have now is better then anything civilian can get... your looking at all old military surplus shit they used to get.
BTW you really think bunch civilians can do better then a trained soldier? someone thats done nothing but train to fight, had combat training etc. And yes if there was a civil war revolution outbreak you really dont think the government wouldnt take action againts its own people? such as using planes... come on now.. if it came down to it they would. question is how many of the soldiers, airmen, sailors etc. would drop there shit and go home ? I know many that would say fuck this... and leave take care there families. yet there still probably be many thatd stay an try enforce marshall law if came down to that
You do need a background check for all guns you buy from a dealer and online. Unless you have a FFL, in which case you already have had your background check. You can buy from a private party without a background check in a lot of states without a background check. They have also went up in price, you won't get one after shipping for less than $500. The slide fire stocks start at about $300. Though it is pretty fun to shoot, they aren't really that useful for anything as they make the gun wildly inaccurate. If you want some examples look at mil spec ar15 vs commercial parts, the commercial parts are always higher quality(thicker/more durable)...the miltary takes things like cost, weight, harsh conditions into their selection were jim-joe-bob just wants BFGs and to prep for Armageddon. This is the wasr 10 ...a romanian ak47....fully legal by atf, don't even need a background check....400$ off the fucking internet:

Your right I wildly exagerated some points and I stand corrected but my gun store has a USED WASR 10 for 320$ right now and then you could make your own slide fire stock. I also agree they are very stupid. You do need a background check for all guns you buy from a dealer and online. Unless you have a FFL, in which case you already have had your background check. Ive been looking up getting good shotgunfor hunting without spending an arm and leg.. What would you say would be better the newer semi-automatic hunting ones or under-overs? I've been looking at gettting an under over. which would you say? and what brands8mm recoil is pretty harsh all the time in my opinion. My Lebel has the marked barrel and takes factory ammo just fine. I do have some hotchkiss surplus that I picked up a while back, but it doesn't usually fire due to the primers being crap.
What other type of 30-40 krag have you seen? lol. They weren't black powder, it was actually the first smokeless powder round used by the US army. The .30-40 means .30 cal bullet with 40 grains of powder. While this is a black powder designation, it isn't actually a black powder round and uses standard powder. Given the design of the rifle, I don't load it hot, as I mostly just like plinking. However, the action on this rifle even after 113 years is smoother than any new rifle I have ever picked up. Not shooting this rifle would be a travesty. My rifle is as nice as a Krag comes. Unmolested, uncracked, and the wood is absolutely beautiful. My wife looked at it when I paid for it and went :O but I only payed 500 for it, she just saw a old ugly rifle. I saw a beautiful rifle that just needed a little cleaning and oil and was worth at least 2-3x's that. Why own a rifle you never shoot or don't intend to shoot? I've been eying martini rifles lately.
Mine uses .311 bullets, which is the same as my PSL and some of my mosins. With any surplus ammo, you just make sure you pour hot water down the bore after shooting. Though honestly, I have been running tests on different 7.62x54 ammo on a model 38 carbine and I have yet to see any rust from any of the ammo I have after weeks of not cleaning. Granted, I only shot 20 rounds at a time through it. I've never even seen a gun rust up due to ammo except for a black powder.

i found the 8mm quite mild when compared to 300 sav. in a remington model 8, or my overcharged .303 or the 30/06 in a shortie sporter brush gun if it's really bumping hard myabe you need a stock lengthening buttplate.8mm recoil is pretty harsh all the time in my opinion. I have a SIG 550. Its much better built than anything the US Military currently fields. Better than a M-16, better than a M249, way fucking better than an AK.lol where are you seriously getting this all from? you think cause militiary weapons cost more that means there not better? heres little insight.. they just get charged more! cause its for the military and government meaning theyll spend more! if you take same piece of equipment that was 500 for the military usually pays 1500 for same piece equipment.. why? because they pay alot more for same thing... pump action is better than either. CHeesus gave a good recommendation.Ive been looking up getting good shotgunfor hunting without spending an arm and leg.. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then.CHeesus gave a good recommendation.
That, and a pump can handle any load. Autoloaders have become much much better at working with a range of shell energies, but it's like a single-action sixgun ... the pump will shoot anything, and either sound (a slide getting racked, a hammer getting thumbed) have a distinctly relaxing effect on sundry sphincters. cnThe 870 platform is solid. As for wanting an auto over a pump, you lose some range by utilzing gas to cycle the round. PLUS, the sound of a 12 gauge racking a round is quite often all that is needed. Not saying it works every time, but i have seen hardened criminals freeze and drop to their knees upon hearing the sound.
i still prefer the pump for hunting. Gives me that last "desperation" roundPumps are good "all around" weapons, especially for home defense but he said he wants something for hunting. I would recommend an over/under. As far as brand goes, don't worry too much about that, find one you like as far as fit and price then go bust some claybirds, to try it out.
Range is not an issue, I figure 15 feet at the most is all you need to shootThe 870 platform is solid. As for wanting an auto over a pump, you lose some range by utilzing gas to cycle the round.
