Setting Up The Closet!

Hello fellow RIU members,

I have been oredering and acquiring the different items i need to setup a closet grow.

I have already ordered this ballast and hood http://www.ebay.com/itm/200813199175?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

and a 2' 4 tube t5 EnviroGro for Vegitation

and this fan for ventilation http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-Active-Air-inch-In-Line/dp/B002JQ14F8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346770113&sr=8-1&keywords=Hydrofarm+Active+Air+6+inch+In-Line+Fan+400+CFM.

I plan on buying a 8 outlet digital timer power strip and I plan on making a door out of a Magic Mesh wrapped with B&W Poly. Im hoping that will make a good door and be able to seal off the closet. I was going to make a DIY carbon filter or end up buying a good one.

Anyone have any ideas on other stuff I should get? Any help is highly appreciated. I want to completely set the closet up before germinating.

Thank you all!!!

Do you only have an exhaust fan? If it's in a closet, I'd say get a circulation fan as well. What about the walls, paint them white or (in my opinion) the best thing to do would be get mylon and line the walls with that to reflect more light. If you're growing more than 2 plants than you're definitely going to want to have more light/reflective light.

Best of luck on your grow!

You are going to want to ensure that the closet is completely light proof and completely airtight. If you are doing two separate rooms (veg, flower) then you need to make sure that no light from either room goes into the other. You can build a simple light filter if you are sharing ventilation fans with each room. There is a great video on youtube on how to build these. The guy builds stealth pc cases and dressers. He has a whole slew of videos on how to construct them and in it he will show how to build the light filter. I would definitely recommend purchasing a brand name carbon filter if you are trying to be stealthy. I have heard from some people that home built filters work just fine, but if you are designating an entire closet to growing it is going to have a really strong dank smell. You should check out Phresh filters. They have a great website that has a calculator for you to enter the dimensions of your room and the amount of lights you have, and it will tell you what size filter to use. That fan that you have the link for looks pretty good but rather expensive. The light system looks pretty amazing as well. Just ensure that your ballast is above any water that may be in your system to ensure that you don't spill and fry your investment as well as yourself. I'm not too sure that the magic mesh is going to work very well but you can definitely give it a try. Are you growing hydro, or soil. You will definitely want an air intake as well. In addition you will want a cirulation fan. To make the most of your lights use mylar, it is a highly reflective material that does not absorb heat it deflects it. You should also invest in a good thermometer/hygrometer or two or more.

Thank you for the info xscottrox.

I dont plan on using the whole closet, the closets dimensions are 6ft W x 6.75ft L x 8ft H. Im going to be doing veg and flower in the same closet but only one at a time, or so i plan so far.

Ive looked at those duct fans and had found one for around $15 but i read somewhere once you hook up a carbon filter those fans really slow down.

My biggest problem is making a door for the closet right now. I was planning on using the magic mesh but as i looked at it more it would be really hard to wrap black white poly tightly around it. Any ideas on a makeshift door that is air/light sealed, easy to set-up and not to expensive hopefully. I cant drill holes in anything as for i rent.

Anyone with an idea please help me!!!! I am going to be setting up in the next few weeks.

Thank you RIU members!

Also i was planning on putting the lights and plants in the middle of the closet, there would be a foot to 3ft from the plants and the white wall at any point. Would i need to enclose this somehow? If so HOW?

Come one RIU'ers I need some help!!! There are so many experienced/expert growers on here and i could really use some help.

its a 336 cubic feet closet, I got a 400w hps light and a 400 cfm fan for my closet, i have a 2 ft 4 tube t5 fixture for veg.

Do i need to enclose the area im using? im only going to be using about 4ft or so of the area.

If you will not be using the entire closet and will not have a perpetual harvest (two seperate rooms) you will definitely want to close off some of that space. It would waste light and affect the growth of your plants to have a really large room with only one light and all of that extra space. Have you checked out getting a grow tent? As for the duct booster fan, yes it will significantly slow once you hook up a carbon filter. The 350 cfm that the fan was rated for is at max boost while in a duct. You would need to create a ducting system which I plan to do.

The closet is big enough to do perpetual i just hadnt thought it thru (how long into flower to start vegging new plants).

I looked at tents but there to expensive for me right now. I guess i could lay planks of wood across the shelves and use black and white poly to make one or two little makeshift tents

xscottrox any ideas on how to make a door for a closet with a regular door not a sliding door?

I do have an idea, but im not too sure how easy it would be to construct. Instead of buying a very expensive tent, you can buy one of those portable closets. Which essentially is the same design just without the mylar and is not completely lightproof. If you were to purchase one of these and if you were to purchase some mylar or try to find mylar with a foam backing. You could use an adhesive to put the mylar into the portable closet and make it light proof. You could try a 3M spray adhesive. I have used this adhesive before when covering a speaker box with speaker box carpeting. It worked really well. It may be complicated, because you will definitely need to take the time to measure before you cut your mylar. I have been thinking about doing this myself instead of purchasing one. This could be an inexpensive alternative to a grow box. Although I have a buddy who went to one of our local grow shops that sells new and used equipment and he was able to pick up a tent for only $75. I am also about to start converting a side by side fridge.

EDIT: Here is a good deal on a foam backed mylar sheet http://www.ideastage.com/Large-Cool-Space-Mylar-Accordian-Fold-Auto-Sun-Shade-W2-Side-Screen-Print-763688101
