Where I live there is a big battle going on about putting flouride in the drinking water. Apparently we have a large population of people with extremely poor dental hygiene. I always tell folks, "brush only the teeth you want to keep".

Crazy
i agree , if you got bad teeth brush em . . . . i dont want fluoride in my drinking water just because its not natural and it makes no sense to put government money toward somthing people should be doing themselves . . . i have no idea if fluoride is bad for you , but if we didnt need it to evolve then we dont need it

i jst think people should take care of themselves(and fluoride and shit like that shoudl be cheap), gov money could be spent on education and then people would have better jobs and have more moneys to by flouride

Fluoride is quite natural actually. Much of the drinking water in the southwestern quadrant of the country is naturally fluoridated, so much so that there are many people in Texas with damaged enamel from it.

What amazes me is that the "fluoride is poison" meme has spread so far so fast. People prefer a spicy conspiracy theory to boring fact. Ow my balls. cn

So Mr chemist could that be because fluorine is very Electronegative & calcium found in your teeth would rather bond with the fluoride molecules instead of the other compound that make up your teeth?:bigjoint:

i'm gonna stop posting @ 24,999 just to fuck this thread and pull the ultimate troll; coming back as a mild-mannered, agreeable, boring sock puppet.

Actually phosphate chemistry comes into play. Tooth and bone are made of the mineral apatite, a calcium phosphate with one excess charge that is ordinarily neutralized with a hydroxide ion. However it exchanges easily with fluoride ion, making a more acid-resistant, harder but somewhat more brittle material.
Finally, while elemental fluorine is extremely reactive and electronegative, fluoride ion is very unreactive except as a precipitant for certain ions. cn
