airy buds

So i had a slight mold issue the other day and i had to remove a small bud....the issue was handled, so i decided to test my dry area and hang the bud...well it dried terribly!

The calyxes shrunk and the hairs looked about 10x the length they should be in good bud...basically it was the worst, most airy bud i have seen! Lol this was on day 39 of flower...

My question is if they're airy bc they're not ready? Or bc i fucked up somewhere? Im hoping and assuming its bc resin has not swelled my buds yet and it just wasn't done... i started week 7 yesterday so im on day 44 and i figure i got 10-14 days left...will my buds stay dense after harvest if i wait longer and let the buds swell? Or am i doomed to airy buds? I knpw something is happening bc my branches are bending under the weight of the buds as of 2 days ago...just had to stake em

Thanks guys

2 weeks min. 3 wouldnt hurt. They dont look airy to me. Once the pistils recede into the calyx they will swell. Your pistils are still standing straight out at attention.

During the ripening process pistils recede into the calyx and swell them making the bud. Because its the bud(calyx's) that gets you high not the pistils or hairs.

Also get some mighty wash to take care of that mite problem it looks like im seeing. If im lunching, disregard.

Yea thats why im worried... they look fat and dense but dry into airiness lol is my dry area drying it too fast? Or will they stay dense once they're ripe?

And yea i got a slight bug problem but i try not to spray anything... i got plenty of beneficial bugs too bc of a veggie garden near by...more worried about mold, but i got great weather forecasted here in sunny so-cal

Thanks man

could be a few things... #1 maybe they were dried too fast although a doubt this would cause a great deal of difference rather than slowly as drying seems to effect taste more unless they wee heat dried which isn't the case here. #2 some strains just aren't that dense, no matter what. #3 they will fatten up alot in the last week or 2. this seems the most likely to me as almost every strain will put on good amount of weight in the last phases. my advice would be to just wait it out, and i'm sure you will see a difference from now until then.

I still think your harvesting a little to early with not enough receded pistils.

Or if you have ph&plant problems that can cause airy buds also. Your plants look healthy though.

Whats the strain?

Before you harvest post some pics on this thread so I can see what they look like when you normally harvest. And dont chop please. I mean its all up to you but I think I can help.

On your spraying or not wanting to spray I totally feel you on that and it is my opinion that any organic oil sprayed on the flowers will taint the taste. I have used doktor doom fogger and mighty wash both within a week before harvest and it did not mess with the final product. Spray and rinse with water the next day. With the fogger I put it outside the room and blew it in with a high powered fan so I wouldnt get any liquid on my plants just a nice light fog in the air. No tainted flowers and it was very effective. I really recommend you look into mighty wash though its 99.8% electric static charged water. I think the 2% is just a wetting agent but I dont know. I do know that it kills eggs & mites.

Your right though there not that bad right now. I just know they can get out of control fast. Keep eye.
Peace

Haha im not chopping yet but thanks for your concern. I just removed part of a bud that was dying or rotting or something. I wanted to be safe so i cut a good portion of it around it and figured i would hang it to see how it was drying. IT didnt dry well and i just want to know if its the area im drying in or if its bc the bud is premature still. Oct 5th is day 56 of flower and ill prolly go 60 days if I really have to...trust me im in no rush, i spent alot of time and money on these babies and i want only the best. The strain is Master Kush from Nirvana, a 7-9 week hindu kush x skunk cross.

I appreciate the help too, ill definitely be posting some more pics as it gets closer to the end of week 8. The trichs are not ready yet either, only about 20% amber and im looking for about 50/50...Almost none of the pistils are receded either like you said and the way theyre drying sucks, so im still waiting. Ill look into that mighty wash too. Thanks again

I've been told drying fast or even if the plant is too hot it will air itself out resulting in the airy buds, dunno. Makes sense that a slower cooler dry would cause them to tighten. All the buds I've been tested turned out airy on the dehydrator but the ones I've let air dry were tight, dunno.

I've been told!!!! I don't know about anyone else but why do people post things they don't know. All your doing when your not posting actual things you know cause you have been there and done that is spreading misinformation to people who are looking for advice on how to grow. If I had one wish for this site it would be for people to stop giving advice or opinions on things they have no actual experience about.

Rnt over..OP I believe it's just cause they were taken early once they really swell it looks like you'll have some nice tight nugs. I've always found buds taken early(ya ya most of us have done it) are kinda airy.

(Btw the plants look all tweck bc they just started falling over under the weight of the buds, im so proud haha i used bamboo stakes and tied em up nice and neat and they look happy)

You still have 3-4 weeks and they should swell some more during that time.
I got 1 plant thats gonna go all the way into Nov. before I harvest her and it's a Indica don't figure.

Nothing is wrong with those plants. They are just at a particular point in the grow cycle. Certain varieties simply are not tight buds. Always slow dry.

Start flushing in a few days, it's probably within 2 weeks or so probably 10 more days anyway though. Don't pull it before the first whatever you do, the 5th-10th would be best. Even at three weeks, I highly doubt they would degrade all that much and the weight would really gain. When it swells it can be hard to tell but that's how your buds become Rock hard and nice after loosing 75% of it's water weight from drying. So what I'm saying is even if you stop noticing the swell it still is swelling until and somewhat after all the hairs have fully receded and the bud looks swollen and dominant over all the plant. Can't wait for the swelling to start on mine, I'm pretty close to where you are, maybe a week behind or so.

Thanks man will do..im thinking they'll tighten up, the strain gets great reviews on the seedbanks site for density but we'll see...i smoked some of it out of a vaporizer and i got faded lol

I can go to oct13th if i really had to, which would be day 64 (9 weeks done starting 10), but i was looking at the 6th as ideal...also about flushing, i gave a top dress of some bat guano on the 19th (lasts 2 weeks) and some molasses on the 22nd. Should i give more nutes then start flushing this weekend? ..thanks for your help and good luck!
