Plant Growth Regulators

Hi !

I'm new to this community and the marijuana community in general. I have found great sense of fulfillment growing marijuana. I really see it as therapeutic hobby. Maybe some day is legal in my state and I can jump into the wagon, but I'll talk about that once I get there, if my state gets there. I have been learning how to grow for the past 4 years and due to this subject, I don't think you really stop learning growing ever !

I have come across some interesting information about Plant Growth Regulators. I have never used it. However; I'm aware of their existence for quite a while. I recently came across a thread showing the negative side of the PGRs for Medical Marijuana. Is the only negative information with a degree of credibility because the place is a real laboratory.

I have a question for the experienced growers and users of PGRs.

Why is harmful to smoke a plant grown with PGRs ?

I ask just because we are taught to flush and feed nothing but water the last week or two. I have been growing for the past 4 years and I have never had problems with chemicals in my plants or my health showed any signs of damage (That I'm aware of ... lol).

How is different a chemical N-P-K or additive vs PGRs ? It doesn't matter that you flush very thoroughly a plant ? regarding the PGRs.

Or is an exaggeration the use of PGRs in the cannabis and is safe to consume, regarding the information that have been exposed ?

Thanks in advanced

I too have been growing for some years and never flushed before harvesting, never did noticed any diff ( I tried it once ) not sure flushing does anything at all. Growing vegetables in the garden you never flush before harvesting and to my knowledge noone has died from chemicle poison due to fertilizers.

I think flushing is a waste of time in soil personally.I don't do hydro so I couldn't recommend flushing or not there.I believe Proper drying/curing will lead to good taste imo and it has worked fabulously.

As for PGRs, the only ones I use are superthrive and root compound when I do clones. I figure the plant has been growing for 1000s of years why mess with it.

you guys r pretty wrong with the flushing. flushing is very important when it comes to taste. i just harvested and i flushed quite heavily the last two weeks o and im using humboldt mix, however since i didn't have proper drain off during the life of the plants, it was difficult to get everything out. the point of flushing is to get rid of build up in the soil and inside the plant. go crack open a fresh stem and taste the water inside of it, if its tarty like nutrients then it needs more flush. u will definitely tell by the taste of it when u smoke it if it was properly flushed especially when using sythetic nutes. as for pgr usage, some of them are not meant for human consumption such as the ones used in gravity and bushmaster. a lot of the nutes on the market have pgr's in them whether its listed or not, i like to use snow storm because of the tricontinol, some people also like to use bap6 (benzlyaminopurine-6). they can be very useful when training your plants to have the perfect height, amount of tops or for the roots.

The arguments against flushing are that you remove nutrients needed to break down other nutrients in the plant and thus trap those nutrients in the plant by not supplying the precursers.

There are two schools of thought on this. It's pretty much preferrence. I do stop giving nutes two weeks prior to harvest but I don't flush.

What about PGRs ?

Are the buds harmful to smoke, even if you flush the plant ?

In the Organic World what would be the equivalent to a product such as 'Gravity' ?

A fellow member mention to me in another thread liquid seaweed as one alternative for 'Organic PGR'. I use Liquid Seaweed (Maxi Crop) and I really do not notice any difference within the plant or the buds.

I'm after a Organic product or Chemical fertilizer (but safe for human use) that perform like a PGR such as 'Gravity' works. I'm not a commercial grower or trying to find a shortcut. I'm in the quest of growing dense-heavy flowers.

There area a lot of different PGRs.

Kelp (maxicrop seaweed) has a lot of natural auxins and giberellins. These make plants stretch out. Pretty safe. gibberellic acid is sprayed on all of your grocery stores seedless white grapes to give them that oval shape. (theyre naturally round).

Now when you talk about things like Humbolds gravity/bushmaster/bushload, you're talking about paclobutrazol. Paclobutrazol inhibits the biosynthesis of naturally-produced gibberellins in your plants. This results in shorter internodes, earlier fruitset, thicker stems, and more seedset in plants like tomatoes and peppers. It also inhibits growth of lateral branches. Basically it makes your plants shorter, stalkier, and heavier. Unfortunately, there are negative sideeffects of consuming this. Lab studies have shown that over time, consumption of paclo results in an increase of liver size. I'm not sure about carcinogenic properties, but I drink enough alcohol that I want to keep all other liver damage to a minimum. The makers of these products have had a lot of issues registering these products for sale as fertilizer, and that's why you saw them pulled off the shelves in California. I think GH has now released a product called BushLoad, which contains paclo with the warning that its "for ornamental crops only." So personally, I'm wouldn't use the stuff.

Try to find some lab studies on this stuff, and make a decision for yourself. Don't trust too much of what you read from people on this forum, and definitely dont trust anything you hear from humbolt nutrients or other manufacturers regarding the safety of their products. Try to look for 3rd party experiments on paclo.

We use a product at work called Sumagic, http://www.greenhousemegastore.com/product/sumagic
Pretty serious shit, I don't think it's allowed in California either .

I have another question. Since we are in a Forum, I'll assume we like to talk about plants in general. I have notice in my Farmer Market some Over Size Pepers, WaterMelon and Pumpkin. In addition wathcing the Travel channel last night notice some of the vegetable created fro competition and stuff and those were 'MASSIVLEY' huge. I know genetics like in cannabis is the main component for oversize fruit, flower, etc.

Are those type of plants fed PGRs in some kind a way ?

there is alot of negative hype surrounding pgrs simply because some companies started using ones that were not approved for food crops, but there are many types pgrs most of them are completely natural plant extracts that are approved for use in food crops. every single rooting stimulator cloning gels etc contain pgrs these ones are completely safe and beneficial there are also other amino acid pgrs that can be used through out the plants life and they are not the least bit harmful or posioness. plants produce them on their own in stressful conditions this may slow down, so providing these pgrs in the nutrient solution can be a great benefit. pgrs also provide a great natural way of creating feminized seeds. also cloning can not be done without these hormones. when i say cloning i mean really cloning and not cuttings alot of people view cuttings as clones but infact true clones are done in vitro sterile conditions where a plant is regrown right from a somatic embryo and does not cary the age of the mother or any of her dieseses. So when i see threads like PGRs = poison i laugh its almost like hormone racism there are many types of pgrs some snythetic and some natural, some amino-acids and some not, some good and some bad. always do fallow up research before taking anyones advice as accurate information including mine.
