175 watt hps vs 180w Blackstar LED Grow Light

Growing in 18" x24" x4 feet locker and I'm having minor heat stress with the 175 hps, so I'm looking to get led in there. In identical grow situations how do the 175hps and 180 led stack up yield wise ??????? If I could get 3oz's out of my hps what could I get under the same circumstances with the 180watt Blackstar ??

Ive seen 2oz+ off 1 critical jack auto under a 135w LED from HTG... more than a few times, so probably the same or close to it. Have to figure though, some genetics don't do so well under LED's and some flourish.

I have run a BS 180 for about 4 months and think it will veg that space fine, but don't know about bud density. I would get something that is as close to the size of your space as your budget allows, so maybe a BS 240 (really about 135 watts), or maybe a BS 500 (around 235 or 240 watts from what I have heard). I mention Blackstar only because I have one and they are more reasonable cost wise than many. Besides the fact that you asked for a comparison, that is. I actually purchased a larger unit from another vendor after doing a run of auto flowers with the 180 and having a poor yield with airy buds. I tried to do too much with too little. FWIIW.

do u think a BS 240 will be enough for growing 4-6 plants in a 2 x 2?

I would use 2 Blackstar 240's if you are growing 4-6 plants. I'm using 1 each on my 3 girls right now. I'm hoping i don't end up with the airy bud syndrome which i've read can be caused due to not enough light

no ! ive got two 240's and now they are expensive clone and veg suppliments...plus the two infra-spectrum LEDs melted and dripped onto the class cover....but what the heck, it was an honest go at the new teck...i wasnt really impressed.

richinweed, did you make it all the way through the whole grow using just the Blackstars? I'm interested to know what the issues were with the final product. Not enough yield? Airy bud syndrome? Other?

Some of them do have the UV bulb melt down issue. 1 of my 4 did and it was replaced under warranty.

Well as for the grow itself what i found was a wierd sort of uptake issue...but then i realized it was a burn or deficiency mabey from the light itself...time (like 5 months)...then i started to fuck with the magnesium uptake...the best solution i found was lotsa pearlite.....or...heat mats...i dont think the led lights stimulate enough photo-synth to cause enough transpire of h2o from the plant ...i see some of the dedicated LED growers have found solutions to this .seems obscure to me... i find the total saturation of tradirional lights makes it easier and less interactive...also , I might add that i dont trust the fact that these things will last the promiced duration....and no i never finished that grow..i added hps and it was fine.....im froM canuk land ..gotham hydro doesnt keep records of CN transactions...so they blew me of....BEWARE CANADIANS, GOTHOM HYDRO OF NEW-YORK STATE WONT WORK WITH WARRANTEE,,,,AS OF ALL THE BIZ ...ITS NOW OVER.!

2x2 is not big enough for 6 plants unless you start 12/12 from seed or do SoG. 4 plants barely fit but can be managed. That said, you will need 2 LED panels of this size/wattage to cover such an area adequately.

finally, i'll go with a 0.8x0.8x1.6mm grow tent and will start with 1-2 plants and add another led panel for 3 and 4 if i can manage to fit them all in ;)
that been said, i still look for a led light now

.8 x.8 x 1.6m - that's what, like 2.5ft x 2.5ft x 5ft? Sounds like you have a good plan. I'd start with 2 plants.

If it wasn't for the UV bulb burn out issue with the Blackstars, they would be a good choice for an entry level LED panel. I went with 4 of them for my first grow just based on seeing some good journals under them here on RIU. You might want to look at Apollo LEDs. Like the Apollo 8 for instance --> http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-arrival-Apollo-8-LED-Horticulture-led-light-120-3W-8-modular-unit-Red-Blue-2/498627419.html. If that's too much cash, they have cheaper, smaller models (i believe.)

I just picked up a second blackstar 240 on ebay for $170, so far I have been happy with mine. Not sure if there was a big difference between the 2012 flower models or not since there is a flower and veg model. Both mine are the 2012 flowers. I will use my haight panel for veg somewhere around the house. I am confused as to how these arent pulling as good of results as a hps concidering the amount of PAR these put out. I imagine that once I add the second light the PAR meter wont even be able to read the levels since it maxes out at like 2888 umol Here was a side by side of the two brands (sorry no side by sides of hps yet)
I plan on running two plants under each blackstar.

Yeah you got it, Cidly. I will let one of the Apollo guys weigh in on the customized spectrum option... but i'm sure the default would do just fine. 1 of the Apollo 8's would be great for that size space. Start with 2 plants.
