I have gotten the last version of the grow bible with the genetics section. it was cool and helped me understand a little bit how it works. Asking the breeders out there what's the best book(s) to start learning with almost no knowledge on genetics and selective breeding to start. specific to cannabis or not I'm at square 1 looking for step 2.

Did you ever take biology? It's not much different than breeding anything else. It's mostly preference when you're just beginning and making selections.

I might suggest a general non-cana genetics study. Get to know a general dominate verse recessive trait type relationship and how they are past from generation to generation within a species. From there take a good look at genotypes (entire DNA) and phenotypes (expressed DNA).

Good luck with the pollen chuck ;)

Cannabis Botany by Robert Connell Clark (poor spelling) has a ton of info. DJ shorts book puts it in the simpleist terms I've read. The section by Chimera in the back of the Grow Bible is great. I also plan to buy Marijuana Breeders Bible soon. Have not read it yet. It also seems like Subcool has a book on breeding, although its doubtful he read it.

Short Version........... Selection selection selection........ Takes a whole lot of plants to lock down the traits you want generation after generation. Kill all unsatisfactory examples, and accept failure when it happens.

Oh.... select for quality, not quantity or yeild! (my opinion, but the one I'll stick to)

biology I took. I worked in the field of animal research for 10+ years as well. genetics weren't a part of it though so I am very rusty like 15 years since class rusty. I can draw the boxes, that's about it LOL. Most anything written I can eventually comprehend I'm one of those dorks that read how-to and text books instead of Lee Child or Tom Clancy and shit even if I have to reread it several times I will eventually get it. I loved the sections tacofarmer mentioned I just need background and some simple walk thru type shit on how the boxes work and hoped for some specific book names like cannabis botany. Failure is learning so I'm ready for that. Had I not failed a million times at growing I wouldn't be kicking out such nice plants. Thanks, keep suggestions coming!

I've read the Botany book about 5 times and a lot of it is still over my head but I still try. It has a lot of info on hemp in it also, so there a few spot you have to watch out but most of thats pretty obvious. My bookshelves are filled with how to books and survivalist manuals and such...... Closest thing I read to fiction is the trip reports on Erowid, or some of the grow reports on here. I actually think the DJ short book is the easiest.... plus his techniques and philosophies are most of the reasons my herb is good.... That and practice. I'm hoping to meet hime in Flint next week, share a sample and see if it is what he would call truly "great" herb, I already know it passes the Acid test (something most breeders leave out, possible the most important part). Good luck, and please share when successful.

Yeah man, I suggest hitting one of DJ's seminars. His knowledge is awesome and it really helps you understand an old school breeding program. OM on Saturday the 17th is the closest one to you I think.

Do you know if your supposed to have passes just to see him at the G3C, I don't think I'll be vending that day but don't want to miss it. The seminar at the OM is on a weekend and its a lot trickier for me to see that one.

Not quite sure about g3c. I'm pumped for that though, I've now given dj 8g of blueberry nug and 4g of blueberry bubble hash, and still haven't gotten to puff with him. However, the hour and a half I have spent talking to him one on one is a fine trade off. I wanna puff a fresh batch of blueberry, the moonshine haze cup winner cut and some Johnny blaze grown from beans he gave to me last time I saw him.

MMMM Johnny Blaze. I almost dropped my cash on that a bunch of times, read a lot of hermie reports on it though. The pics in the seed descriptions are mouth watering and I don't usually make my pics based on the photo in an ad. Oh and don't worry, if DJ does not have time to puff with you I'll see what I can do to help you. Don't even have to twist my arm.

Can I point you to sannies opengrow. If you can take it those boys can make your head spin with facts about everything about breeding! Also if you have a real drawn out question they will have a drawn out answer. There is a circle of some of the best breeders in the world at your fingertips there.

Not trying to knock RIU's people but if you want to learn and you do not wish to waste time going threw rubble my advise is that if you are serious about your question.

You will get more outta sannies then you will a few books.

Well it's gone now and cant be recreated due to the loss of DJ's sativa blueberry dad. When the last of the stock was being discounted last winter by legends, DJ was just giving away all of the extras he had to growers that dug sativas. This being the second time we had met, and second time I gifted him with fire blueberry or extract, he busted out a 10 pack of the Johnny blaze for me. Nevil's personal haze cut crossed with the blueberry dad. Bazing!

"Breed your own Vegetable Varieties" by Carol Deppe is a good book on general breeding/plant genetics. Its also a fun read, with some stories, and dense info all in one.

I have a few Blueberry Sativa males (e$cobar's), one stinks more in veg than the females do in flower. Only interested in using it if the females are any good. Those Nev's mixes are supposed to be straight from Nev. Out of the Grail project. Trying not to get to anxious as I don't expect these to be even a little quick. There a trip though, looks like cartoon sativa's, perfect christmas trees in veg with the most serrated sativa leaves I've ever seen in person.

Cultivating exceptional Cannabis by DJ short. I got Jorge and Greg's bibles both plus one from Ed Rosenthal I think it's closet cultivator or something. Got to get some breeding info from the DJ and I can't make the seminar :(
