Any way to fix thin area on the stem?

A few of my plants have a section of their stem that never thickened out when the rest did, the area is dark brown and really looks unhealthy! The third plant I couldn't get a good picture of the problem area as I have a few toothpicks and some ribbon holding it in place as it tips over if I don't.

Is this a common problem and is there anything I can do about it?

Looks like "damping off"..usually happens to seedlings though, as a result of over watering/high humidity...

Okay I have them in Rockwool sitting in net pots in a DWC system. The Rockwool is sitting in the water as a few plants roots haven't begun to hang yet. Should I take the problem plants out of the tank and let them use up the water in the Rockwool cubes?

You're definitely drowning them. You don't need the rock wool in the water. Do you have adequate bubbling? You should be able to keep the pots a couple of inches above and still stay moist if you have adequate bubbling action.

Damping-off is correct, and most likely due to the sponge they are sitting in. The soaked rock wool is causing major problems, yes take them out and let the rock wool dry out as long as the roots are coming out of the cube they will find the water.

Okay, definitely going to remove some of the water, I've got 6 long airstones in the bottom of a 10 gallon under the bed style rubbermaid so I think bubbling is adequate.

Maybe a noob question, but should I remove the rockwool from the rootballs and have them in only the growstones?

When I ran a similar set up I germinated her in a 1 inch rockwool cube, then this went into clay pebbles.

Don't remove her from the rockwool imo, you'll jut end up bustin' a few/lot of roots and freaking her out even more...

Rockwool can be a bitch for damping off, it's just so easy to have them too damp, especially germination..or maybe it was just me ;)

You overwatered earlier and caused the stem to rot away at the base and now the plant is fucked, that stem is too thin to feed and water the plant.

Yeah, 20 days of Rockwool directly in water now that I think back on it probably wasn't the best idea but I never even thought... I took all the plants totally out of the DWC and let them dry overnight while I changed the solution and lowered the water level, the damaged plants look the same, I'm not hoping for a recovery on these, but the rest of the plants look even healthier than before.

Thanks to you knowledgeable folks for helping me out on this first grow, especially BUDS, you've saved mine and my plants ass some serious trouble a few times now. +rep for that!

I've never had a plant damp off but from what I understand that when it starts it's a sure thing that it's going to die.

Nah, you can overcome it if you take the right steps. But the OP's pictures look bad, really bad. Obviously they are tough plants. I am amazed pic 2 still looks healthy above the rot.

I will post an updated picture asap as the results are amazing, pic 1 was lost, pic 2 is better than ever. After dropping water level and adding new airstones that spray water onto rockwool instead of them soaking it, problem was fixed. The rot has stopped and even reversed to an extent, even though it is still discolored, pic 2 is one of the fastest growing plants I have.
