n00b breeder looking for advice/discussion on my project -tga-soma...

Hi there, I am one of those crazy people growing 12/12 fs and I am not even that good at germinating my seeds... so I gotta make the move and stop buying so many expensive seeds!!

I am working with a 3x3 tent, a male Space Bomb (TGA) in the same container as a female Space Bomb. I would like to hear comments from people who have grown this strain, originally I thought it was a super potent strain but now I am seeing THC content 15% so I am a bit disappointed with that but at the same time the sugar that isnt in the buds goes on the leaves so it should be a decent strain to breed with.

So I am hoping to get a bunch of Space Bomb seeds... even though I have never grown the strain... the short flowering time is appealing to me.

In the room I will also have 2 female Afghani (from the house of the great gardeners I believe) that are about 10-14 days behind. I hope they start budding within 10 days because in about 15-20 days I am planning on shacking the Space Bomb male and then cut it, wait 2-3 days and move all plants in a different room and start again with another male, maybe...

I also have a female NYC DIESEL from soma in the room that is the same age as the space bombs. (do you think its a waste of a 30$ seed and that I should just grow it without seed!!!? hehe)


Do you guys think that Space Bomb is a good male (and good strain?) for a first breeding project?

One more question... is it ok to have the male and female at the same age for breeding purpose or normally people try to get the male going a couple weeks prior to the females so that more pollen can be created before pollinating ?

Does it look like I am doing the right thing and that I will get some decent seeds to play with?

I say you are on the right track. Put the diesel in with the mix. Space diesel or diesel bomb seeds will be more valuable to you in the long run. You can have hundreds of beautiful seeds nobody has ever seen before. Not to mention diesel and space bomb sound eicked. Space bomb is good shit ive smoked 3 phenos. All were killer shit. If you can gove the male a two week head start thats be great but if mot it will still work just maybe less seeds. Good luck, if this goes down send me a PM. Id like a piece of this. Thanks for your comments! I have been reading about breeding ... A LOT to learn, I will probably just let it happen and let time teach me...

I got the NYC Diesel in there and she is beautiful! I also changed my mind on the Afghani because I dont think they will flower in time. I swapped for 2 Medicines (next gen)

Next time I will get my male going 2 weeks prior ... but for now it will have to do, I am glad to hear that I will get a decent amount of seeds anyway.

It has only been 2 days since my first post and they are now much bigger hehe!! I took a gamble using space bomb thinking that if Agent Orange did so well 12/12 from seed I guess other tga strain probably will!! I only had 2 spacebomb seeds so it was meant to happen this way! So far Spacebomb fits 12/12fs style of growing very well I think I am onto something!


So if all goes well, I will have Space Bomb, Diesel Bomb and Space Meds!!

doesnt matter the strain male or female, just depends on what you like and how "true bred" the strain is, S1s being the easiest to work with the hardest to get origional strains and looking plants though, and F2 because at that point they are ripe for inter breeding and picking phenos to breed out,while retaining a true line of breeding)and also there will be variations of thc%, the one they tested was 15% doesnt mean you male may not have some recessive 27% in there

honestly, ive waited 3 years and gone through so many males... i picked the one that suited my needs, smelly, bushy, fast growing and resinous ect. if its none of those things its not worth breeding, if it is give it a go and grow the F1s cross and backcross them like craazzzy and start looking for more males if high quality in the F2s and backcrosses that are of the quality's you want to breed out.

30$ seed for a 100 1$ seeds sounds like an okay trade off and if your careful youll still get some smoke!

I didnt have the luxury to see what the male was like before I chose it, 12/12 from seed, not even sure it has a smell yet. I just hope that from using good genetics to start with is good enough for me learn and and get many decent seeds. I know that all plants in my little breeding project seem to be decent growers 12/12 from seed...I hope I get more than a 100seeds from the NYC diesel, and yes I will smoke the buds for sure!! it's all my personal stash so I ll be careful to remove seeds before it goes in the bud buster.

I dont plan on trying to stabilise any of this for now because it could be redone with better plants if the results are amazing. So all the backcrossing stuff will be for future projects when I understand a bit more about breeding. For now all I want is a big stash of potentially wicked seed, and I am hoping to get many phenos!!

the OP, like me, might not have room for a mother room. i'm not a fan of cloning conceptually either as it's "not natural", and from what the dealer that's seen a lot of growrooms i showed my first grow to, he was impressed that my plants were healthy and mite free. cloning seems to stress plants out i guess, or he's just seen some old infested rooms.

i'd rather smoke ANYTHING than afghani, even mexican brick, and the taste of diesels is disgusting to me, so i like your choice of space bomb too. there's more to a plant than potency. QUALITY first. space bomb is more of a mid or even high, isn't it? i'd take 15% of mid over 30% stone every time.

well it will for sure yield a lot of phenos some will be good some will be bad but since its an F1 generation for the mostpart the ranges should be in the middle so you if the genetics put in where good you should get som good stuff back. sounds like a good plan to me to build you stash of seeds.

I like the idea that each seed has the potential to be something special. Sometime in the future when I find something truly special I will try my hands at cloning again but right now I want a ton of seeds so that I can just start many of them and be very picky about which ones to grow.

Thank you all for your inputs, I got a bit discouraged because I realized how little I know about breeding and I started to think that I wasnt gonna get anything decent to grow because I didnt select a proper male or did nothing that a breeder would do when starting a breeding project but it's not like I have a lot of room to play with either. Now I decided I would simply do what I planned and read and learn as much as I can in the process. this will be an ongoing thread and I will update my progress.

I plan to save some pollen for the afghani ... I thought it would be nice to grow a classic strain you dont like that strain? I am growing the fem version from the house of the great gardener I thought it would be different than the original that taste like hay I hear?

How about this run 12:1 so 12 on 5.5off 1on 5.5off for 2 weeks at the end of the 2 weeks you take clones and witch to 11on 13off for your flowering

You can use rooting gel or powder or just water just do a few extra incase some don`t make it if you don`t use rooting gel I like a propagator for cloning but you don`t need one.

Anyway let the clones root anywhere near a window under a small cfl anyway really they`ll be find with low light till they get roots.

Then when your flowering plants are ready stick in your clones to veg on the 12:1 for 2 weeks again and take fresh clones before moving them over to 11:13 you could even put a shelf up in your grow it only needs to be 50cm high to raise clones down there.

That will get you bigger yield and going from clone will still be faster then rooting seeds and each time you clone and it roots you end up with a much older plant that has veg`d more makes for a pretty strong plant

I read a while ago about germing really old seeds they found some really old bits of dried plant with fruit and seeds and they could not get the seeds to germ so the took the plant matter and managed to get some to root and grew a tree from that.

Nothing wrong with that, seed`s are a way for a plant to evolve but in nature sometimes you see plants that grow when a bit of them is separated from the rest of the plant, orchids and banana `s are examples of such plants where it`s more common now days to use a cutting then to seed them, as plants evolution is now some what in our hands and weed at it`s current level is man made but its ok because we are nature too


If you want something that is not too strong but easy to grow and has a nice taste try "Early skunk" if you have not tried it before it grows well even outside in a pretty cold environment and it`s not that strong more like the early skunks and widow`s if you grow it right it will have the cheese`y smell and taste to it and be a hard ass plant so great for taking clones from and letting them root pretty much anywhere.

not sure I get your lighting schedule, I have seen it before but I dont see the point. Whenever I will be ready to clone I will go to the hydro store and get the proper gear (pucks, rooting gel, dome ... ) I won't start cloning until I know what strain I want in my gardens ... for now I am going to wait and see what the next batch will be like (got many strains on the go right now...)

And Early Skunk sounds ok but I do not want something not too strong, I like strong stuff Anyway my goal is to stop buying seeds for a while, I cannot say that I have grown many strain twice... I have a small collection of seeds that will allow me to run decent strains while I try my own (crossing my finger that I will get there!!) just for safety (never know what kind of mutant I might get!!)

Holy Fuck I was gonna fuck everything up Sometimes I dont think

As you can see I am still very much a newbie. Thinking that I could grow a big male in my basement ... I can now see how volatile pollen is. Too bad my females were a bit too young to be pollinated ( I think ... less than 2 weeks into budding ... I think I can see a few hairs turning orange so it might have worked a little) but yeah I had a few sacks that were open. I pulled the male out, I couldnt save that much pollen yet unfortunately maybe enough for a branch or 2.

But I will try 2 different ways of collecting the pollen,

I have the spacebomb that I pulled off the ground replanted in a small container with a bag on top and 2 holes at the top of the plastic bag, back in the tent (hopefully wont get too humid)

I chopped a few branches that are in a glass of water that I will put by a window seal upstairs on the second floor.

now that it is happening this way I hope I can get enough pollen to pollinate at least a few branches of NYC Diesel and Medecine, but also a few others like Chemo and my own strain Smiler.

have you seen my journal? it shows how i got my male set up, a "chicken wire tent" works great, right next to all my female. just make sure your collecting the pollen daily or bi daily cause it will lose its viability fast in light. i take the whole plant and tent out once a day, shake it real good and colloct the pollen on the foil then i go and i shake each cluster with the jar underneath. now that they are later in flower, ive added foil directly beneath the clusters too.

you need to have your plants in a vegetative state to clone them. 12/12 forces flowering, so yeah, you'd have a hard time cloning. that's why autos are impossible to clone as they go straight into flowering. i think 15 or 16 hours light is the minimum required to force regs into vegetative.

no I tried cloning with 18+ hours ... I wasnt always growing 12/12 from seed and I now have a little veg cabinet in which I will start vegging a few plants and reduce plant counts.

Anyway, I dont know whether it worked or not, but I used the tiny little bit of spacebomb pollen I had, mixed it with rice flour (a little too much maybe!!) and pollinated a few buds, grapegod, haoma, medicine nyc diesel. But I am pretty sure the nyc diesel was too young still so hopefully I will get enough pollen to redo it... I am going to put pollen on most buds on the NYC diesel.

I am going to keep a Chemo male that I had to pull off a container (the other 2 were female) and I will try and do the same thing... it worked pretty good last time and I was not very careful pollinating the buds on the chemo (jordan) , and there is not a single seeds on the rest of the plant so it seems to work pretty good, now I better knock on wood because I did 4-5 plants yesterday and I sure hope the seeds will only be in the pollinated buds!!

The hairs on the grapegod were all orange this morning so I am pretty sure I will get at least that (is it possible the hairs are dying off because I touched the bud so much or it really means the pollen has worked?)
