if my humidity wasnt so high, i would let them go till more amber. i cant risk losing to budrot, so i have to harvest when i can.

I dont use the magnifier much either,I can just tell when they're nearing the finish line. The leaves get kind of a leathery look, there are very few if any white pistils left, the buds are hard and on some strains the calyxes get kind of a sharp feel, the plants are using like half the amount of water. They just give that vibe like "wrap it up man, I dont wanna do this shit anymore" :)

Yeah,, they just have a look about them. I rarely see any amber, usually by that point they are over the hill and declining

im going with some posters, their looks will let me know...for example , white pistills still stand out thats mean they re still looking to get a pollen for produce seed thats their job...till they lost abitily to receive the pollen, all pistills will recede into caylxes and caylxes will become swollen and some pistills will turn more dark brown, orange, or some strains red, it mean that they re in the ripen stage...ready for harvest.

you have to remember every growers have different timeframe of harvest to their desire and type of high.

no microscope for me, less the worry is better :D

happy gardening.

Totally. That's why the poll asked what YOU do.

I voted for what my trichs look like at harvest. I do not base my harvest time on trich colors alone. I was just curious when you all harvest. If you do not know what your trichs look like under a scope around harvest time then I guess there is not much to vote for... If I could edit the poll I would add an "i don't know" option.

If I started a poll about what ppm to give flowering plants at week 1... we would have people saying they don't use a ppm meter, they let their plants tell them what they need.

Although that is admirable and a sign of your expertise... it does not help with getting an idea of what people are finding success with.

But, if you don't know then you don't know.

Kinda funny to see how many people like to lower the potency of their harvest by harvesting with 50% amber trichomes.

Just goes to show how the myths have been pounded into people and they have a hard time letting them go.
The amount of misinformation regarding cannabis on the interwebz is truly staggering and this poll is a funny reminder of how people like to ruin their weed based on unfounded theories.
By all means go ahead and dilute your weed, but a 50% amber harvest represents a loss of about 40% potency (and I bet some people let it go even further which could represent a loss of potency of about 40%-60%).

^ 50% amber or more had only a few votes until late last night/early this morning. It is possible that those who have trouble sleeping/working late hours got their vote in. I found the surge in the wee hours of the morning interesting. It makes sense..

Harvest when all the pistils recede and you see chunky monkey. Scope you ask? Not anymore. Its better to just harvest when the plant looks done. Then check the trichs and adjust the next harvest accordingly. Checking trichs all the time damages them plus its a huge pita getting a good focus while the buds are on the plant. Plant ripens like so- red hairs, then they recede (disappear), then the calyx's swell, and now your ready to harvest. For me this usually equals to about 10% amber.

I've got some that have pistils that will recede... but some of them do not.... especially NL... I've taken them at 10 wks, plenty ripe in my opinion, and the pistils are still there. I've always thought of those sharp red pistils as a trait of dried NL buds (assuming you get them fairly fresh/not roughed up).

The green crack plant on the other hand... those pistils recede and seemingly disappear right around harvest time.

When I had 4 Joey Weed Apollo 11 plants that I was pulling clones from.... There were 2 of them that I liked to harvest while 50% of the pistils were still white. Going further did not seem to increase potency but did decrease yield on a few different occasions.

The "look" that I see w/o a scope has to do with swollen calyx and the color of buds... When the fresh lively green and white starts to go away and more of an orange, red, yellow hue is present. That looks ready to harvest to me. It seems to lineup with looking under the scope and seeing that there are very few clear and random amber.

I'm not sure why or how checking trichs damages them. What are you doing to your trichs?
I use a loupe and/or a camera to take high res pics, I don't damage any trichomes and I can check as many times as I want to.
As long as you don't touch the leaves/calyxes with your hands or any other object there's no chance of damaging any of them.

And on the subject of "huge pita getting a good focus" I'm not sure why that is the case for you.
A good loupe or a 5+MP camera will allow you to get a good focus every time, it doesn't even take too long.
It's certainly not a pain in the ass, I just set my camera to macro and shoot away and then check the pics on my laptop.
Very quick and very easy, without damaging anything.

i agree^^^^ with above about checking trichs. i dont damage any but i dont check them very often anyway. i have a 30x jewelers loupe and its works fine to get a quick check on trichs.

i just jarred up a micro grow tonight that i chopped at about 40% amber. harvested after 11 weeks of flower, under daylight cfl's the whole grow. clones were veg. a few days after rooting, put into flower and finished at about 10" tall.
i usually harvest these after 9 weeks of flower using hps.
