Why are you supposed to check the calyxes for trichome maturation?

I guess it sounds like a good enough idea, and I'm willing to play along. But...... what is this based one? Do the trichs on the calyxes give you the best idea of where the overall plant is?

Let me ask you this... Are you looking to smoke buds or leaves? Trichomes on sugar leaves show up sooner and therefore mature sooner. You could probably find mature (amber) trichomes on a sugar leaf at week 5, but your buds aren't nearly ready....If you were growing tomatoes would you look at the leaves to see if they were ripe?

The calyxes swell as if the flowers were seeded, and by that time it has about two and a half weeks. It will continue to produce new triches as the older ones darken, and it slowly transpires it's chlorophyll if you dry it whole.

Sure, but I was asking about calyxes. I'm not going to judge if it's done by looking at leaves. But why do calyxes hold the answers? More so than the buds themselves?

Calyx's are the part of the bud you want to smoke(besides the trichome)
So that is why you judge maturity by the trichome on the Calyx>which make up the entire bud(along w/ sugar leaves)
