No not really, I approached them first and they said they're only signing reserves, I told them I'd like to go active and they told me to go speak to the Navy
Did USCG tell you that their "no active duty enlistments" policy is for this year, 2013, or indefinitely, or what? I am interested because my son is interested in joining USCG.

I spoke to them in November and the recruiter told me they didn't have any open spots for active CG, I assumed she meant at the time. I did a little research after and read somewhere they only recruit around 1,500 new people per year and the CG has the highest attrition rate (84%) in the military, so less people finishing their time or retiring = less open spots.

What branch did you serve in?

Army Infantry

When did you serve?

2001-2005

Do you feel it was worth it?

Overall no, mostly due to my time in Iraq.

What did you learn while in the military?

It did teach me to be responsible and to be on time.

Where do you think you would be today if you never joined?

In jail

How are the benefits after having served, as well as during?

Not bad, I used them to go to school and buy a house

Would you do it again?
Yes, but only so I could refuse my orders for deployment.

I wanted to be an operation room specialist when I joined but was told they didn't have any open, should of walked out then. I got 13 g for going infantry
13 grand for joining as infantry? Is that the actual title, Infantry?

Why did you choose the Army instead of a different branch?

I think I know what you mean, but its not what was said.
Basically less people are leaving the CG than in recent memory so recruit intake is down and retention is very high.
I didn't do a comparison search, but keep in mind the CG is the smallest of our armed forces & when everybody decides to hang & make a career of it for what ever reason it clogs up the pipe.
I wish you well my friend.

Active Duty Military Workforce Situation Report

FLAG VOICE 323

With the poor economy and the new post/9-11 GI bill for educational benefits, we are experiencing extremely high retention rates. For active duty enlisted the attrition rate has gone from a five-year average last year of 12.2% to 9.5% in 2009 and is currently 7.5%. This equates to approximately 1600 (4150 - 2550) less enlisted members separating from the Coast Guard each year, which results in significantly less advancements. To offset this lower attrition, we have lowered the number of recruits entering TRACEN Cape May down to 2250, the lowest level since before 1958.

Even during the 1990's streamlining years, we only reduced recruiting down to 3000. Keeping this low level of incoming recruits has significant negative impacts on the workforce in the out-years and it doesn't increase advancement rates, it only provides a means to help align body to billet so we don't have a huge deficit in the AFC-01 military personnel pay account. The active duty officer corps is also experiencing high retention, which slows down promotion rates and we now have more officers than billets.

In the President's FY2011 budget there are 1112 military billet reductions. If the President’s FY2011 budget is approved and retention remains high, by April 2011, we will have over 1500 more active duty military people than we are funded. PSC will release messages shortly that define what voluntary measures will be used to try to increase attrition.

How was the actual pay?

did you end up with PTSD?
Pay wasn't bad. I was e 5 sgt when I got out. Was making about 2,000 every month take home. 525 of that was for living off post and another 150 for food. No ptsd tho. I just feel that the military is bull shit for most if not all, of what it does.

I commend you. Most people will never understand courage the way you and I do. Most people think courage is embodied by our decisions to fight. It gives me the urge to light a doobie to know someone out there understands courage the way I do.

Thanks homie, that means alot. The famous saying " if we knew then what we know now". If you can, spark that shit up, if not, I'm gonna spark one up here soon. Mi yerba muy fuego!!!! Your right too, I don't think they will get it either. It's not there fault tho. I remember standing in line with my son once talking to this older lady. She asked me if I took him to church and I said no. She said "you gotta get them while there young". No offense if your religious, but I think that sums it up. I grew up watching GI joe, Heman, and transformers. I watched hulk hogan wave the red white and blue. In school I was made to put my hand over my heart and pledge allegiance to a inadament object. They got us all when we was kids and it's hard as shit to pull out of.

Were you on a ship ? I spent over 9 months on a ship with no ports . We went from Norfolk to A-stan the only land I stepped on was after we arrived and the same going back only it was around 10 weeks and we almost had a port on the way back . At least there was talk about one . I hated being at sea , I was sea sick the entire time . See the world or really just the states on a military hop was more convenient for me . I flew into bases all over the US for free and was very content with that . The two carriers I was on were no fun at all . I understand that a lot of guys had a different experience and saw many ports , that was all they talked about , how much fun they had and how much it sucked to have to be on this tour with no ports for all that time . When we came back to Norfolk so many guys got drunk , into trouble and tossed in the brig it was a record or something .
Yeah we went to Hawaii, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Diego Garcia, Australia, UAE, Somalia, San Diego and San Francisco. I never got sea sick, spent 18 months aboard a carrier(CVN-72) and 3 months on a Gator Freighter (USS Trenton LPD-14). Only 3 kinds of Marines; ones getting ready to go overseas, ones getting back from being overseas, and ones that are overseas. Ooooh Raaah. Only time I got tossed in Jail was in Perth, local drunk tank, Piece O cake. There was a little trouble with a local girl in Dubai, but it was all worked out.

That's it . The CH-53 can refuel during flight also . Some times they loaded them into a C-5 and flew them in but this time they didn't . I was on that ship the whole time until we got there and I promise you there was nothing about it that was exciting .
Oh I dunno, when a Tomcat comes in too low and smashes into the ships fantail, things get pretty exciting. Going up on the captains deck and watching carrier qualifications is pretty cool too. Maybe fishing off the stern or going in the forecastle when they drop anchor, some pretty cool shit. Plus the Nuclear stuff, which we didn't see much of.

Lotta guys just sat around and watched TV and played cards though, I went to the weight room a lot.

Army, Combat Engineer, Light Infantry...

When I was a mindless drone - I liked it... But then my eyes were opened to the reality of things that the US Military is pretty much evil. If you go in, go Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard... Army and Marines are for the weak minded - which I was.

There should be no joy in killing your fellow man just because the industrial complex and world banksters want you to. Rambo is bullshit make believe... Get a skill, get educated, get the fuck out. What good is all the money in the world if you lose your soul in the process? Lots of military committing suicide cause they can't live with the shit they did in Afghanistan and Iraq.

RIP Pat.

I've been on active duty for 9 years now, and I have seen some shit...just last week I had to threaten 3 dog owners for it.

Is it worth it?

No, but I do it anyway.
