Gun Free Home

I would like to challenge all those people who are against gun ownership to proudly display a sign in the window indicating they live in a gun free home.

Do it for the children.

More stupidity.

There apparently was some newspaper article that listed all of the gun owners and their addresses in the local rag. I think the newspaper figured it was it's civic duty to let moms know where the guns were at.

the owners were very upset. Why? I thought they were proud of their weaponry and figured that to advertise their posesssion would be to deter breakins and such.

Now you want us to advertise if we have no weapons? This is another in a long long list of kneejerk, thoughtless little bumper sticker slogans upon which the real gun toters depend especially if it will replace critical thought on their part.

Some have found it wise to advertise that they have vicious dogs on their property - they do so for several reasons, one is to indemnify themselves from civil liability (somewhat). Another is as a matter of courtesy and of course there is the magic of informing intruders that it might be wise to go elsewhere.

Why should I advertise I have no firearms on my property if I have no children and no desire to have children visit my home?

But the stupidity of the notiion is that there is absolutely nothing to gain from advertising that there are no weapons on the property except to make some foolish gun toter point.

Oh, you figure that a robber will see such an advertisement and say "well, that homeowner has no reason to lie to a thief" and rob that house over another right?

But Canna - these are the same folk who scoff with their knowing way "why don't you post a sign saying you have no guns in your home" "bwahahahaha" yet they take issue with a newspaper using public information in order to display which homes do have weapons. according to those folk's logic, they should not only be proud but thankful that the robbers will skip their homes.

Isn't that what "gun free zones" do?
The gun free zone signs may as well say "predator hunting grounds". What a concept, we'll put a fucking sign up to stop criminals. Bullshit, only law abiding citizens are disarmed by this kind of garbage.

Putting a sign up either stating you do or do not have a firearm could have both positive and negative effects. I'd rather not tell them whats in my play book while they are thinking about breaking into my home. If I was breaking into someones home, I would think that the fear of the unknown would be the greatest deterent.

You know, when they posted up all those registered gun owners and their addresses, my first thought was to reverse that map and highlight those without guns just to see how the other side responded, even though essentially it did that anyway. Wonder if they would still feel as safe knowing every criminal in town knows that at best they are going to be facing a man hiding upstairs in the bedroom with his wife, wielding a 20 pound axe.

I thought you were proud of not having a weapon. You can show your support with a sign in the window or maybe even a yard sign so people driving by will see it.

Every last one? I see danger in subsuming the individual into a collective, then judging the collective. Someone earlier today wrote something about "not taking responsibility for the actions of one's group". This is the same sort of logic to me and as wrong.
If someone "outed" me in a newspaper as belonging to some group that is part of a controversy, i'd be right steamed.

I also see that your post didn't address the more serious problem: that the published list is a de facto registry. They're seriously talking about banning guns now in NY. Showing up on the newspaper list will have consequences, should a restriction and confiscation come true. Very bad form imo. cn

Where have I ever proclaimed that I was proud of the absence of firearms in my home? This is the sort of straw man the right is so proficient at erecting.

Furthermore, what makes you think that a thief would take the sign as valid? It might be just as likely that I am one of those who yearn for the chance to "protect my stuff" with a weapon. I could be "inviting" the felon into my home just for the oportunity to shoot him dead in the interest of home protection and in so doing become a hero to my gun toting friends.

My home is free of guns, filled with morning stars though. Ever seen a guy live to tell about being hit in the face with a morning star flail? Nope, doesn't happen.

So are you going to be the first to proclaim you will put up one of these signs?
